Sonar X2 Producer/Kontakt master volume

Hi all,

I'm not sure whether this issue is related to Sonar or Kontakt however here's a copy of what I've sent to Native Instruments support and Cinematic Strings support. Any help would be sincerely appreciated!

I’m using an expression pedal with Cinematic Strings (Kontakt 5). It worked fine whilst recording MIDI but I now can’t get any sound out of the track during playback or even when it’s not playing back. How do I solve this problem? I’ve inserted CC11=127 into the track but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I'm also having an issue where I certain instruments are reverting to a default volume level after I change their master volume in Kontakt. Is there a way to get them to stay at the level I set?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,
Chris

I'm not sure what the problem might be with Expression other than that SONAR has an option to Zero Controllers when Play Stops the will reset it to zero. But there's also an option for Patch/Controller Searchback that's enabled by default and sould read the last Expression event when starting playback. make sure that's enabled in Preferences > Project > MIDI.

As for Kontakt's Master Volume, the volume control in the MIDI track sends CC7 when playback is started and will override what you set in Kontakt if it's enabled. By default, it will show (101) where the parens indicate it's disabled. But once you move it, it becomes active. Right-click the volume widget, and choose Disable Control to disable it again.

I have on a couple of occasions had volume weirdness like this with Kontakt.

I believe I created a new midi track and copied/pasted the midi data from the original track to the new one, and for me that seemed to take care of that issue.

I DO know that lots of presets in Kontakt use something called Key Switches, to allow dynamic alteration of certain aspects of certain presets.  One example is the VSL Strings preset, from the included orchestral factory library sounds.  As a keyboard player, when I have strings essentially layered with something like piano, I want to hear that doubled sound throughout the range of what I am playing on the piano.  Well, the default key switches for the VSL Strings preset use the low E (don't recall the note number or name, but on the piano patch it corresponds to a low E that a bass would play).  Anyways, whenever I would hit that low E, the key switch setup for that key changed the articulation of the VSL Strings to staccato).  So, I altered the note numbers for that preset's key switches to be another octave lower, so as to no longer interfere with the range of sound I wanted to hear VSL Strings for.

A similar thing occurs with Reaktor.  I spent HOURS AND HOURS of time trying to figure out why when I used a particular sound, that it would play just fine, but then for at the time unknown reasons, it would suddenly sound a whole step lower.  Drove me NUTS.  It turned out that this preset also had a key switch set up on the modulation wheel, that would cause the pitch to change by lowering it a whole step.

I do not know if this is what is happening or not for you, but it is perhaps something to look at, as a potential cause of your issues.

Yep definitely an issue with Kontakt right now - I didn't experience this in X1 or X2 although I don't know how much of it has to do with a Kontakt update. It drove me mad the other night and I could not figure out why it was happening. I ended up pasting the clips to a fresh MIDI track like Bob and the problem went away.

I had that happen in Kontakt occasionally, but already pre-X3.

Recently I have also seen this with FabFilter Twin 2 synth - the FF synth batch settings would simply change i.e. output volume is suddenly set to a much lower number. No clue why that happens ...
