Awesome thanks!!! looks exactly like what I want except the wireless part, but maybe technology hasn't gotten that far yet.

I'd like to use the matrix part of sonar live, but I want it to be wireless!!!!!!!!!!!! GODS OF TECHNOLOGY HEAR ME AND GIVE ME WIRELESS!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't seen that one and will keep it in mind :)

negative, I have a laptop, super expensive, don't want it floating around with me; I want keep it stationary with lid closed while performing. I want to use it's power, along with the touchscreen abilities of win 8.1, and sonar x3. but I want to use a WIRELESS TOUCHSCREEN monitor to access it.

Thankx though. hahaha did you think I used a desktop while performing?

I think a Surface Pro of thoses Win 8 Tablets might work for you...

But it seem like the prices of TouchScreens monitors have finally started to fall

If only they will tell if it's a 10 point touch... Or maybe it's me?

hmm I never thought about going with a surface; question, will matrix on sonar x3 work with the surface pro? that might be the ticket!

If you have an Android device get : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.humatic.tdaw&hl=en_GB

Works on my Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 for instance, all you need whilst recording yourself... and it is wireless, and you don't have to chug it around....

If this is not big enough maybe it will work on Google Glass.... ;)

I believe there is something similar for iPhone for the trendies....

For windows phone no idea, but who cares about that...

I'm using a Surface RT via Remote Desktop. It is a nice tool to have.

What's kind of cool about it is my primary DAW is stuck on Win 7 due to various issues but the Surface doesn't seem to be phased by it.

Great, thanks for the info.  Be careful when making the switch to 8.1. I am a software engineer by trade and there are a lot of issues when upgrading from 7. Best to do a clean install. That being said once win 8.1 is installed correctly and all driver issues have been resolved, it is an awesome operating system!

Lenovo makes a wireless monitor. Otherwise get a Surface RT. I think BestBuy has them for $200 starting this weekend.

Yeah, I really like Lenovo as a brand, but their service is atrocious. I think your referring to the Thinkvision LT1423p - it is a wireless touchscreen portable monitor. But so many people have prepaid for it and Lenovo still doesn't have a release date. Plus they aren't communicating very well with their customers about it. That product is what first got me salivating for a wireless touchscreen portable monitor.

You guys have been great. I felt like I exhausted my avenues for the a wireless touchscreen monitor, but I'm thinking a surface might work.

At $200 an RT is a steal (imo). It comes with most of Office (Excel, Word, Lookout, Power Point) also which is a bonus if you use productivity apps.

My studio room is fairly dead which isn't a real problem if I'm DI-ing or using soft synths but right outside my door is a fantastically live space where I record acoustic instruments and vocals. So I use the Surface mostly as a remote control when I want to record in that space. I find it is still just a bit small for mixing. I've been holding off on a touch enabled 27" screen until I upgrade the OS which is unlikely this year. Going to have to do a clean install and not looking forward to that.

I think you'll enjoy the Surface.

Mike

I do believe you are correct, Mike. $200 is a steal and will do what I want which is basically to act a remote so I can trigger loops via Matrix View. Thank you for your advise. BTW if you have any issues with the 8.1 install, PM me I am a Microsoft Certified Professional and can help if you come across any issues.

Sincerely,

Wait, Alex, what do you mean? Remote desktop connect? See, i'm not interested in connecting via remote desktop. Is that how the surface connects? $hiznit, I was hoping the surface would just act like a second monitor....welp back to square one.

mmorgan, could you elaborate on how you use the surface as a wireless remote control?

I also run Windows 7 on my DAW system and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I am looking to get a Windows 8 convertible (laptop/tablet) and it would be great to be able to use it this way.
Is it easy/quick to connect via Remote Desktop? Is there significant latency, or could you mix effectively is the screen were bigger? Any issues or concerns?

Please let me know - I'm curious!

In your Win8 system just start typing in Remote Desktop Connection (you may have to be in the Start screen). There may be several options but I use this. You will be prompted for the name of your Win 7 system so you may want to look that up before hand (Control Panel : System : Computer Name). Enter the name of your Win 7 computer when prompted. You may be asked for credentials (User name/Password) if you have them set up.

I usually get a warning about the Certificate from the host not being valid but I answer to "Go Ahead and Do It". At that point you should be in and your Win 8 station will be controlling.

I haven't noticed any latency issues but as I mentioned I use it more as a remote control for hitting the "Record" button from a remote room. The Surface is a bit smallish but I could use it for mixing if I wanted I suppose. It can be used to drive The Matrix View (that's for the OP).

This is not difficult to accomplish so you should just give it a try and see if it works for you. In my opinion any monitor smaller that 23" is probably going to be somewhat ineffective but that's just my opinion. YMMV.

Mike

Interesting, thanks for the link; unfortunately it is not what I want. Still just want a wireless portable touchscreen monitor. Doesn't need a processor, doesn't need ram, doesn't need hard drive. Just needs to be able to clone my win 8.1 desktop

Or $8 if you already have an android device and possibly likewise for an apple device :).

Alex, thanks for this link. If this works on my nexus 7 I'll b stoked... and might even spring for the new nexus 10, although the surface rt for 200$ on black Friday also looks intriguing...

Having never used remote desktop I'm kinda flying blind at the moment as my rig is down...

Hmmmm....

Great thread!

Okay I did some googlin' and turns out you can trick a tablet to act like a 2nd monitor. Don't know why I never thought to check on this. Thankx Alex for gettin my brain flowin again.....now my options are vast as there are a plethora of tablets!

I've done this with my iPad quite a few times. It's a little laggy over wifi (don't expect to be able to play video), but it does work.

I know that it wouldn't give you the Matrix view, but I use DawRemoteHD on my iPad all the time when I'm tracking my drums. It works really well as a remote control surface in Sonar.
