... might find this declassified Area 51 stuff interesting. The general interest article is written by a guy at the National Security Archive at George Washington University (they gather and archive declassified documents). The article is a pretty cool overview of some of the work that was done there through the 60's and 70's with links to the declassified actual documents. http://www2.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB443/ The one that I may attempt to read (probably way over my head though) is a math heavy document (document 10) which is referenced in the Stealth fundamentals section ... and I will quote from the general interest article: The first of those programs, and the unconventional shape of the aircraft produced, had its origins in a 1962 work (Document 10) by Russian theoretical physicist (and electric engineer) Pytor Ufimtsev — which did not spur the Russian air force to either classify the work or make use of it. The paper, Method of Edge Waves in the Physical Theory of Diffraction, when translated by the Air Force Foreign Technology Division in 1971 would consist of over 200 pages of mathematical analysis. A foreword explained that Ufimtsev studied the scattering characteristics of "reflecting bodies with abrupt surface discontinuities or with sharp edges." He took into account "the laws of geometric optics ..., the additional currents arising in the vicinity of the edges or borders which have the character of edge waves and rapidly attenuate with increasing distance from the edge or border." Who knows, maybe I can apply some stealth technology to my basement/bedroom studio.

Interesting that a Russian was responsible for the ideas behind an american stealth program. A long time ago I was really into the whole area 51 thing. Read several books on the subject. What the US did with atomic/nuclear weapons at that place and in surrounding areas is almost unbelieveable. One reason I would really think twice about living anywhere near there. Who knows though, they could have done plenty right around here and I wouldn't have a clue. My studio is currently lined with aluminum foil to prevent the government from reading my mind (this way I don't have to wear my foil lined hat when I am recording). If I do ultimately incorporated the stealth technology I will probably leave the door lined with aluminum foil and supplement that by wearing my aluminum foil hat.

Besides secret U.S. aircraft work, Area 51 also hosted the study of secretly acquired Soviet MiG fighters. The first effort involved a MiG-21, designated "Fishbed-E" by NATO. Israel acquired the plane in August 1966 when a captain in the Iraqi air force defected, landing the MiG at an airbase in northern Israel — an action that been arranged in advance by the Mossad, Israel's secret intelligence service. From January 23, 1968 to April 8, 1968 the plane was loaned to the U.S. Air Force.16

As for anything that may have gone out there in the desert, it pales to what our military and others have been doing out in the middle of the oceans for the last 60 years. A close friend of mine began to tell me some things about his time in the Navy and later working for a defense contractor. We'd both been drinking and I asked about his time in the Navy and the conversation evolved into him telling me some things that left me shaken for a few days. Nothing our military has done or is doing would surprise me at this point.

Did he really defect or did he just run out of gas? Those things had a crazy short range back then :-)

One very reputable pilot did talk about the north pole and the whold "hollow earth" story. Without ex-Nazis neither the USA or the USSR woud have had a space program for a number of years. Funny, I recorded a program last night called Nazis vs Aliens, about to watch it. J

It is not so well documented that Area 51 and other like places were created after WW2 when the US confiscated several top secret German projects and took them home to reverse engineer them. Stealth technology and flying saucers were discovered in Germany way out in heavily forested areas where no one could see what they were doing. The "UFO" hysteria was rejected but then used by the military to fool would-be whistle blowers as to what was really going on. To fool enemy nations they even created a "dumby" department to make it look more authentic (your hard earned tax dollars at work). It worked so well the Russians adopted a similar approach to covering up top secret activities.
And those "grey aliens"? They were monkeys that had their fur shaved off and sent out into the atmosphere and space so that scientists could perform autopsies to analyse the effects of space radiation on living beings before sending humans "out there".
