Any experience on 10m usb cable?

Hi I`m having an issue with a 10m Pro Grade AB USB cable.
On my DAW it`s giving me high Pops and cracks, but on my laptop its working fine.
I`m connecting the Yamaha 01v96i.
Should I stay away from Usb cables longer than 5m?
Any help will do.Thanks
Peace

That is a very long cable. It could be too long. It comes out to be over 32 feet. BTW what is a pro grade cable? Are there amateur grade cables?

A solution that I use with a 50' cable is to use an Ethernet cable with usb-ethernet adapters at each end.

I haven't used this for transferring audio in real time.

    too long? http://www.usb.org/developers/usbfaq#cab1

10 meters is very long. It appears that the reference you list talks about anything greater then 5 meters as being too long.

Monoprice (as well as some other mfgs) make really long USB cables with passive repeaters at the end. I have a 30ft one that I've used in the past for a printer. It works well for items like that, but I tried using it with a midi controller (Alesis ControlPad) from my drumkit a few times and always seemed to have occasional issues with stuck notes and such. it's possible that the roundtrip latency (it is serial, after all) might be causing some issues with your interface.

Are you plugged into a powered port?

Also, are you sure the dropouts are related to the cable length and not to some audio issue on the computer?

    Please list your:

    1. Driver Mode in Sonar
    2. Recording Bit-Depth in Sonar
    3. Sample Rate in Sonar
    4. Reported latency values in Sonar
    5. Please indicate the type of audio interface you are using
    6. Audio interface Sample Rate and ASIO Buffer Size
    7. Sonar Buffers.

I regularly use really long midi cables without trouble - don't know if they are over 30', but certainly are close.

For lengths like that, I would recommend an active (powered) USB cable. One end connects to the PC and other end has a small powered USB hub on the end to which you can plug in another regular cable to get long lengths with no signal degradation.
