SONAR X3 Crashing when opening older sessions/recorded material.
Hello - long time Cakewalk user here. I am hoping I still will be after this..... I upgraded to the New version of SONAR X3 - Awesome! then the couple upgrades since its release. I thinks its C now? Anyways - everything worked great. Well Sunday Morning I also did a Windows update as I do not have it update automatically - I will manually do the update. Anyway, said there were a couple Important updates so I updated. Well Sunday night I had my bass player over and I went to pull up some older recorded tracks that I recorded on SONAR X1 / SONAR X2. Anyways, I tried to open them in SONAR X3 (latest version) and it came up with an error and then SONAR was forced to shut down. I think I saw a couple times saying somthing about corrupted files? WHAT!? This concerns me - there better not be any corrupted files - as they were not corrupted before.... I can not loose any of these files/tracks/songs. I am currently working on a project - well a couple projects.... and another project from a band. These files are not corrupted (atleast they better not be now!!!! - because they were not before,.... ) as I have opened them before many times never having any issue. The only thing that changed was the new SONAR X3 update and I did the Windows Update. So I thought - maybe its something wiggy with the new version of SONAR X3. I jumped on the Cakewalk forums lastnight and found other people having similar problems. However, it sounded like it was not clear if it was the new version of SONAR X3 or the New Windows updates. Well, I think it is the Windows updates.... Here is why,.... I still have SONAR X2 version on my computer - and I know I could open the files/songs in Sonar X2 as I had recorded them in that version and have opened them before with no problem. Well, guess what? Same thing CRASH - SONAR X2 forced to close... So, I am thinking it is not the new version of SONAR X3 with the issue as SONAR X2 should of opened the files with no problem. But, since SONAR X2 crashed also - I am thinking it is something to do with the new Windows updates.... Anybody else know - or have any news on this? CAKEWALK!?

In general problems like this will need for the forum to know what your system specs are. Particularly which version of Windows got updated. Several users have reported issues with Win 8.1. Off hand I don't think your projects are corrupted it sounds to me more like a library DLL got over written that Sonar is not referencing correctly...but system specs first, then there are several folks who may be able to lend a hand. Regards,
Mike Win8(64), Sonar X3e(64) w/ RME Fireface UFX.

I hope you have a backup somewhere. If not, I guess you will next time. You changed a lot of things at once, which widens the possibilities quite a bit. Next time do one at a time. Personnally, I doubt the windows update is a problem to windows as I'm sure it has been extensively tested. If windows 7 had a problem we probably would have heard about it all over the place. Your system is a bit long in the tooth and Sonar X3C is demanding (and not without problems). I hope you get things worked out, you aren't the first to have projects corrupted.

So you backed up like everybody should do before they upgrade ;) > it came up with an error Exact error message please. > I am thinking it is something to do with the new Windows updatesI'm thinking it isn't. Dodgy plugins or drivers that were working with previous versions of Sonar is the most likely cause. Important - Could you check please to see if it is crashing with brand new projects or not please? Have you checked the Windows event viewer for error messages? Do you have a virus scanner? Later on you may consider renaming your AUD.INI file (to reset sonar configuration) but I suggest not just yet.... You aren't giving us much information about your operating system version, version of Sonar, whether you are on 64 bit or 32... your hardware.... Please check my header and perhaps you could do something like me. thanks.. To make you feel better I had a days of crashes when I upgraded to X3C. It turned out to be third party software and now my machine is stable.

But, since SONAR X2 crashed also ...
you can install X3 and X2 in parallel BUT the new installation replaces some of the common / shared components; hence X2 will not be the same after you have installed X3 ...

Hi KM I too have had to deal with corrupted files and here's a work around (provided that any new projects you create save OK) that might help: go into the audio files in your original project (i.e. C>cakewalk projects>project name>audio) and all of the tracks you recorded should be there. Create a new project in Cakewalk and drag them into it. It should run fine. Good luck to you!! jim

You could also install "Driver Booster" form IO Bit. Usually your drivers are forgotten in the process of updating Windows.

Yes importing the audio will work, But you loose all the settings of the FXs and levels....which sometimes take days of fiddling with to get right. So, I to have the same problem....and some of my old projects won't open now...No Big deal?...well this should not happen at all. I also was asked to make my own thread...and I have posted event info and IRQ info...for those who want to see... This really sucks....I went and did a import of some audio...into x3c and played around with it...and then I tried to save it, which it took a long time to do...So being suspect I tried to open that file right after saving it...and it crashed like before....So exactly which one of the sonar's family is misbehaving? Is it win 7?..updates?...cause the circles I'm going in, wants resolution soon! In another thread on "x3c crashing" by Joyof60...deleting the aud.ini file was mentioned...I have not tried it myself... I am thinking more in line with unistalling both x3 and x2 Updating win 7 and all drivers...and then reinstalling only x3c myself...cause I got lots of issues with noise and spikes in cpu performance, hanging, and funny Plugin seek perfornaces happening...even with all my tweaks to the os....still got problems.
