JBL LSR308 Studio Monitors

I just got talked into buying these by my Sweetwater salesman. He says the JBL's have "flowing out like water".  What reviews I've found have all been positive.  I went for the 8" over the 5" as I've been having trouble with the bass mixing on my current Samson Resolv 6.5a speakers - Mixing on the Samson's many times resulted in too much bass; knowing that I try to compensate but its been "hit or miss" and on the miss ones, its back to remix.  Hopefully the 8" speakers will help with the low end mixing.

The Samson's have also developed some High Frequency distortion, so it is time to replace them.  I can hear some high frequency or intermodulation distortion on the speakers that I do not hear with my studio headphones, or in mixes played on the PC's sound system/speakers.

Any thoughts on the JBL's?

JBL speakers are transducers and will not kill your ear even after hours of listening.
JBL has new headphones that will not kill your ear even after hours of listening.
JBL has speakers that make you want to listen to music.
JBL has speakers that can be 30 years old and still work and not affected by the atmosphere.
JBL has speakers that are used for the PA system at the Blues Club.

And JBL has a subwoofer that handles 800 watts and 5000 watts peak and kevlar impregnated cone. May stop bullets if you have to hide behind them.

All I know is what I've been able to read. Supposedly, the tweeter design is the thing. It's a design brought forth from their new gazillion dollar main monitors that has a wide field. It's supposed to give you a wider 'sweet-spot' so you can move around a bit behind the mixer. How that translates to these smaller monitors, I'm not sure, but the selling price seems to be OK.

The speakers came in today and they have been installed.  Big improvement over the Samson's I was using. Along with hearing the bass better (and being able to mix the bass better) the mid/HF seems to have more definition, too.

A few years ago the same Sweetwater salesman would have been talking you into Tannoys or ADAMs. But Tannoys are no longer cool and Sweetwater had a falling-out with ADAM (the owner of the company used to pose in front of his ADAM S3s in his own home studio for the catalog) and don't carry the line anymore.

Even at a class outfit such as Sweetwater, salespeoples' recommendations are based on margins, manufacturer incentives and overstocks. This particular model is a fairly new product, so I'm sure the sales force is being strongly encouraged to move them, probably because Harmon is offering high-margin incentives to get the launch off to a strong start.

But that doesn't mean they won't do a great job. I like JBL gear, and you're right about 8" woofers helping to get the bass right.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

The guy I deal with is a straight shooter and not just a "salesman".  He hasn't led me wrong in the 6 years I've been dealing with them.  He has even got me help from the Sweetwater tech staff on a ProTools problem and I didn't buy it from them.

As a side note about Sweetwater, the singer client I'm currently working on a CD project for is from Ft Wayne.  Her husband's daughter in law's brother is the private pilot for the owner of Sweetwater.  And another coincidence he sits next to my Sweetwater sales contact.

I don't have those but I'll replace mine in-kind if and when.

The model I have had a chemical breakdown with the cabinets. My warranty had expired
but JBL replaced both cabinets.
I had to pay shipping but even so- they were there and they resolved the problem.

First class company IMO and probably some very nice speakers.

I just finished (Saturday) my first 10 song CD project for a female singer.  I always had problems with the bass (too much usually) with the old Samson Resolv 6.5a speakers.  With the new JBL's, the bass on ALL the songs was perfect.  I didn't have to go back and remix any of them!

Congrats firebird!   How big is your control room?  I read a review that touted the 305's as clearer and easier to mix on, than the 308's. (will try to find it and post it)
I am thinking of the 308's as a nice pair to go with my Equator D5's.

I also, saw the LSR305 pair, later yesterday, for $300, but I'd still prefer the 8". I liked my Mackie HR824's and had thought I would get a set of the LSR2328p's, when I saw that they update them with M2 technology horn waveguide. It seems like gear gets better all the time!

I have a home studio.  The area I'm in is about 10 X 20 ft.  I have the speakers mounted on a raised platform (and Auralex "Mo pads") on each end of my computer console desk, which is about 4 ft wide.

I considered the LSR305's but went for the larger 8" speakers, just for the reason I was having problems with bass when mixing.

The price of the LSR308's have had a price reduction (everywhere).  As I'm still within the 30 day return window, I contacted my Sweetwater sales rep about a refund.  I reminded him I didn't have a problem with returning the speakers.  Bingo, he is going to issue a refund for the difference ($100 for the pair).

Interesting to hear there is buzz about the JBLs.  Presently I'm saving up for KRKs.  I may do some additional research now on the JBLs, but I'm motivated to finally get some monitors to sing home about.  I've been thinking KRKs will be my last major addition to my studio set up.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Re: JBL LSR308 Studio Monitors 2013/12/23 08:48:25 (permalink)
For me the JBL LSR2328p's reviews, started my interest in this revamped version. I read an article where Frank Fillipetti raved about the horn from the M2 series, which is why JBL dropped the 2328p, quickly and added that wave guide technology to 2328, creating the 308. They seem a great bargain.
I still intend to upgrade my Equator D5's to D8's and get a set of the LSR308's (I'll be very happy to put the D5's by the keyboards or anywhere! ). I am interested to hear the PreSonus CoActual 8's , too.

Merry Christmas to all!

firebird - since I'm in the saving up and researching mode for 8" monitor speakers I'm definitely going to add JBLs to my comparison to what I'm learning about the KRKs.

Maybe I'll end up joining you in your decision! For now I'm leaning toward KRKs.

I am looking for monitors in this price range, so this thread caught my eye.  However, I see the 308's have rear facing portals and my desk is up against a wall.  That seems to spell trouble for me.  I was looking into the oft-mentioned-here Equator D5's before that, but the 5.25 in woofer king of scared me off.  So what about the Equator D8?  Anyone who has any input would be appreciated!

Sweetwater has the 308s buy one ($249) get one half off ($125).  I checked with my local Guitar Center and they'll match the price so I don't have to wait.

I have a pair of old JBL4311 that I love.  I also have some Yamaha HS-8.  I wonder how the LSR 308 would compare to either speaker.  That would be a test.  I'll need to get a pair to see!!

Re: JBL LSR308 Studio Monitors 2014/02/04 09:23:55 (permalink)
I used to have a pair of the 4311's, which I trusted, until they got reconed and started to sound different to me. I went with the Mackies after attending a shoot out, in Chicago, in 2000, that made that choice very simple.
Now I am very happy with my Equator D5's. I intend get the D8's and the LSR308, and use the D5's in my study.

Thanks for that heads up, gbarrett! I might get mine sooner than I thought!

Hey,
I'm not an expert in audio, but I really like these.

One thing that annoys me tough is that turn off switch is at the back and I have to turn them off when they are not In use right?
I had amplifier + speaker setup and it was on for 5 years constantly.

Outlet strips seem like a simple solution.
When I had my studio for hire going, I left it on.

Since this thread went to sleep a few years ago, JBL has released the Series 7, which are more expensive but include advances from their top of the pile mastering speakers.
