Elias Cole

Here is a more polished song that is completely brand new.  It's called Elias Cole.  Elias Cole is such a musical name.  And it rhymes with just about everything!  My good friend Ron played lead guitar on this song.  Everything else (except the drums) is me. Please enjoy the story of Elias Cole.

Really like this groove, and the tremolo rhythm guitar.  Love the lead guitar!  This is the kind of production that I always go for.  Straight ahead.

As for the song itself, the lyrics tell an interesting story about your character, although I think maybe it's a bit too long (and maybe a little graphic in places).  Also, some of the lyric lines seem rushed, with too many syllables on a line.  But that's just personal taste, so do with it as you will. :)

    Overall, very nice work!

Thank you for listening Walt!!!  It's weird how things pan out.  I consider this to be one of my very best songs. Yet when I posted it on Facebook and on this forum I got very little response.  So you never know whats going to happen.  What I think is my best others don't and vice versa.

Yes, the song and story is a little long.  I agree!!!  And yes, it is graphic.  But the overall message of the song is that drugs are bad for you, even if you're a gunfighter.  Lol.  There are also a lot of syllables and the cadence is choppy, but that was intentionally written that way.

Thank you for the comments on the music.  I think that part of it came out great.  My friend Ron played what I think is an amazing guitar solo on this song.

    Thank you very much Walt!

Interesting story and most of the song is well produced to my furry ears.  My only crit would be the reverb on the chorus perhaps just a tad to much or even a slightly different one would work better.

As for length in radio terms you break the 3:30 rule but it is your song and your tale.  I can think of many successful songs that break the radio length rule

I echo what others said above, liked the guitar, liked the song, liked the mix.  Nice job.

(I hate re-writing, but usually end up with a better song if I do.  You might consider condensing some lyrics and seeing what happens.)

I'm happy you guys listened!!  Thanks John (Wookie) and Scott (Olemon).  Yes, the song is a tad on the long side.  But I can't think of what verse I could remove or how I could make it shorter.  I could remove the second chorus at the end though.  Maybe?  Still, it would still be a solid 5:00 anyway.

It's funny how sometimes you think something is going to be a sure hit and people are going to love it, and then you post it and it just sinks like a stone. Still, I'm glad I posted and I have a few more songs to post soon.  Including a Christmas song which will be lots of fun.  Tanks for listening!!!

I thought I commented on this but when I listened I couldn't log in from where I was. I think this is "excellent" Poor Elias :-( He just wanted to get drunk, enjoy the ladies, and do some gambling and illicit drugs, who hasn't been there?

I knew you would like this song Robby!!!  Thank you man.  Yeah, poor Elias...back when this country was really free a man could buy drugs & liquor anywhere he wanted, gamble anyplace it was available, and legally buy a lady for the night (excuse me girls).  Everyone has their vices and Elias had his.  But you k'now, he died smiling, didn't he?  Peace!

"and legally buy" We all pay for it one way or another... Ain't none of it free :-( At this point? I like the Hertz method personally. Hey, I returned it with a full tank? Shouldn't that count for something?

That's for sure.  If it looks to good to be true, it probably is.  It's the Hertz Donut method.

Shades of The Grateful Dead and The Band!  This is a classic song in every way.  I agree that the reverb may be a little heavy in spots, but that's about all.  Very tasty.

    Elias Cole

Elias Cole rode into town with 20 dollars gold
Lookin’ for wine & whiskey & women bought and sold
Elias Cole rode out of town in a box inside a hearse
And a bullet in his back, Lord, couldn’t make matters much worse

Elias Cole was gambling man with an ace inside his shirt
And a pair of well-worn six-shooters that he used to put people in the dirt
Elias was pretty straight-shooter and he paid his ladies well
But Elias had a little bitty secret that you could hardly tell

    Elias Cole, Elias Cole
Did you ever have a soul?
What once was a heart now is a hole
A hole in the ground for Elias Cole

Elias had a little bitty kit bag with a needle and a spoon
And a pretty little vial of Morphine
That he used up in the hotel room
Elias had a pretty bad habit; it required 3 shots a day
Just to get him on his feet, Lord, just to make him feel OK

Well Elias had a good night gambling and he decide to celebrate
With a little bit extra in the needle and he could hardly wait.
When Elias pulled down that plunger 3 punks jumped into his room
And that little bit extra in the mainline is what spelled Elias’ doom

A hole in the arm for Elias Cole

Well punks are all good at losin’ and they always want their money back
So they all drew their pistols on Elias as he was noddin’ in the sack
Elias made a run for the window but he was movin’ kinda slow
And the ugliest punk pulled the trigger and decided to let go

Elias took a bullet in the backbone and he fell out the window to the street
And a horse drawn wagon ran him over and a stray dog was chewing at his feet
But Elias just lay there grinnin’ cause he couldn’t feel a bit of hurt
And Elias Cole died with a big wide smile right there in the mud and the dirt

Now all listen up all you children for the story of Elias Cole
All he ever wanted was a heart in his life and all he ever got was a hole
But a hole is what dope is gonna give you and it’s six feet in the ground
And the bottle and the pipe and the needle is gonna lay your body down

A hole in the back for Elias Cole
A hole in the ground for Elias Cole

Heavy on the reverb, but a nice song that tells a story. Nice instrumentation, vocals and a good mix except for that heavy reverb.

Hey, thank you very much John!!!  I'll see if I can reign in that reverb a little or maybe eliminate it completely and replace it with some harmonies.

It's funny because this song is years in the telling.  There's a restaurant here in North Jersey where I live called the Elias Cole.  I have been wanting to do something with that name for years.  It's such a musical name.  So, I finally did it and I'm pretty proud of the results.

    Thanks for the listen!!!

I loved it, but also agree, the Reverb on the chorus is a bit heavy and drags a bit..
and my mind was headed for harmonies during the chorus..but that's just my mind!

    Nicely done!

Hey, thank you Larry! Glad you liked it. I think the consensus is harmonies or at least less reverb. I actually have a friend who wants to sing on this song. I think I'll give him a call. Thanks for listening!
