My girlfriend is 24 and American. I've just introduced her to the brilliance of John Cleese via Fawlty Towers, which she had never even heard of until I suggested we watch it on Netflix. She thinks it's the best thing ever and falls into hysterics every time she sees Manuel...plus Sybil's laugh when she's on the phone: "na-a-a-a-a-a-a....I know!" She has been clamoring for British comedy since we've been watching Peep Show together, which she thinks is hilarious as well. I really want to introduce her to more of the classics but I'm not sure how she'd react to Monty Python....she wasn't having any of Blackadder, despite me trying to lure her in with Hugh Laurie as the Prince Regent. Nor would she watch any more of the League of Gentlemen after one episode...just a little bit too surreal and freaky for her tastes. So Monty Python? It's surreal yes, but not so much freaky as just plain ridiculous....might give it a go tonight.

I wonder if the Black Sabbath press conference was as entertainingly incoherent.

I wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquistion... I was glad to hear about the MP reunion. More good news. While they didn't have plans for other shows, they left the door open for that possibility too.

I think it's a terrible idea. Python was very much 'of it's day' IMO. Moments of sheer genius of course, but also a lot of self-indulgent rubbish. Fawlty Towers has stood the test of time because of the writing..every line and scene is honed to perfection, nothing wasted or overdone.

Yeah, I agree with everything you say here. I think some things are best left alone. I also heard today of the "new" Open all Hours that is being made - just can't see it working without Ronnie Barker and a 73 yr old Granville.

I must admit I cringed when I heard that too..what's the point of re-visiting a show without the main character?

I watched an episode of Open All Hours on YouTube a few days ago. Haven't seen it since the 80's. It was OK, dated obviously, but Ronnie Barker was brilliant in it...the script wasn't good enough to stand without him, put it that way. And I still laughed every time he opened and closed that cash register... But Granville was a bit of a weird character though wasn't he. David Jason was 36 in the original series and looked older than that. Yet there he was, playing someone who seemed to be in his late teens or early 20's. As for Nurse Gladys...phwoar!

Hi, I would pay to see this, if it comes around. Heck, I'll even drive to Seattle to see and invite what's his name in Portland to come along! But ... but ... they already spilled the ashes accidentally! It will be hard to follow up on that one!

You really ought to turn her on to the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore stuff, which is very well written, and off its rocker. Warning: Do not play anything from "Ad Nauseum" for her, specially the horse race. She might find it cleverly funny, though! After that, the original Bedazzled is very well written. If you're not too tired after this, get a few Goon Shows. Start with "Six Charlies in Search of An Author", "The Great Bank of England Robbery", "The Phantom Head Shaver of Brighton", "The Last Tram" ... for starters. Monty Python was more visual, but the Goons ... were all in your mind you know? ... because it was live radio! Ohhh .. run over the the Internet and gift her with a set of the Black Adder DVD's! That should do the job. There is some really good American stuff, but most of it will never be released. More than half the stuff that Richard Pryor did was very good, but will never be heard from. Specially his stuff with Red Foxx, which was so insane, and also would be considered offensive these days, and badly so! Favorite line: "I was robbed! My dick is not getting bigger!"

I really like Bedazzled. The best part, however, is the music. Dudley Moore was a fantastic musician. I really wish I could find that clip of a BBC documentary that was on TV years ago where they took him to a beach on which they'd arranged a small ensemble to play some music he'd written as a young man that he'd never heard performed. Even through the confusion of the brain disorder which affected him in later life, you could see he was moved. Really great TV. Never been able to find the clip anywhere. I've tried getting her into Black Adder. I really don't think it gels with her. Maybe a little to "historic" for her tastes? Perhaps I'll try her with the final series in World War I.

You think that Rain would look good as Drimble Wedge? There is always Red Dwarf!
