Dealing with old 32 bit plugins in 64 bit Sonar

I have X2 producer and considering upgrading to X3 Producer. I have a crap-load of old projects that relied heavily on older 32 bit plugins, some of which have been particularly problematic. SampleTank (with Sonic Synth libraries) is a great example and I used it a lot for quick song development. I was on a track of working in Ableton Live (I now have latest version 9.x) and it really blows up a lot on my latest Windows 8 machine, in both 32 and 64 bit. I have a project converted to X2 that contains identical audio tracks, plugin usage, etc... I can blow up the Ableton one in seconds now that I know what sets it off. In X2 (32 bit) I can work with the project, hammer it hard, and it does not blow up, even with the questionable plugins.

I am about ready to abandon Ableton and upgrade Sonar again, at least for studio and composing use. It seems like Ableton has problems with newer Windows versions and 64 bit, most of the pros using it are Apple guys. I had more success with it on Windows XP 32 bit boxes, as I modernized it jumped the shark. I kept buying upgrades hoping they would fix their issues. I have a feeling they have problems with new Windows security and permissions issues.

Now it's time to stop playing around and get projects out the door. I am very close to closing the Ableton experiment phase. I would like to use 64 bit version of Sonar moving forward, so what is recommended way to deal with these old 32 bit plugins? Over time I will likely phase out Sample Tank and others but for now I really need it to work.

Thanks in advance,

P.S. I am ancient Cakewalk user starting with Cakewalk DOS version 1. I got lot's of work done with old versions.

Why not keep the old plugins in Sonar-32 and restrict Sonar-64 to choice plugins?  Then you can use S-32 for older projects and S-64 for new ones.

Sonar X1/2/3 has BitBridge, which is Cakewalk's method of using 32-bit plugins in the 64-bit DAW environment. This may work, or it may give you grief. For the most part, BitBridge is solid, and it has worked well for about 85% of my 32-bit plugins. As for SampleTank, perhaps someone also using that can chime in.

I agree.  You can install both a 32-bit and a 64-bit Sonar.  For projects that rely on 32-bit plugs, you can either try them out in x64, and swap out any plugs that are problematic, OR for those projects you could work with them in 32-bit Sonar, where BitBridge would not even be used.

I made a deliberate choice that for new projects moving forward, I would strive to only use 64-bit plugins, and 32-bit plugs that I had found to work properly in a 64-bit environment.

What I did was to create a sub-folder within my 32-bit folder for all plugins, and into that folder went 32-bit plugs that seem to work OK in 64-bit Sonar.  Then, I add only the sub-folder to my search path for plugins in the 64-bit Sonar, so I never even see any 32-bit plugs that are not known to work properly in 64-bit Sonar.  Since that sub-folder lives inside the 32-bit folder already being scanned for the 32-bit Sonar, it automatically also picks up those plugins, making them available for use in the 32-bit Sonar without having to do any extra specification of path.  (it picks up sub-folders automatically).

So, this gives me full access to all my 32-bit plugins in 32-bit Sonar, and restricts 32-bit plugin access in 64-bit Sonar to only those 32-bit plugs that I KNOW work in 64-bit Sonar.

I hope that made any sense.

FYI, sampletank 2 has been working fine for me in X3 so far.  I had trouble with it in X2 but so far it has been smooth, even in multitimbral instances.

This is what I do with my 32 bit plugins now... no exceptions! :)
