moving from X2 to X3

Hey guys, here's my dilema. I am currently using the latest version of X2 with very good results overall. A crash every now and then, but nothing serious. I have already purchased X3, but am hesitant to install until I finish an important project that I am about to finish. I am especially concerned about my UAD plug-ins working. Currently, I have virtually no issues at all with any of my UAD plug-ins. They are vital to me and don't want to compromise without them - no matter how good everyone thinks their ProChannel stuff is - some of it is not as good as the UAD stuff and many of my current projects use them extensively. If I install X3 can I go back and use X2 as it is now if X3 doesn't work as it should? Seems like when I moved from Producer 8.5 to X2 that was the case. I could go back and work on projects created in 8.5 without issues. Obviously, projects I created in X2 wouldn't open correctly in 8.5, but that didn't matter, as there was no reason to do that. I really want to move on to X3 and take advantage of all the cool new stuff, but not at the expense of having crashes, etc. and not having my UAD plug-ins work correctly.

There should not be an issue but you might have two days of pain (I did). It does take maybe half a day to upgrade.
On the other hand you might have serious growing pains and some plugins may stop working and you are playing hunt the thimble...
And on the other hand it might be really simple and nothing went wrong.

Finish your project first before upgrading I suggest (I assume you will be done by the end of the year?).
And please note always do a full backup before upgrading.
... and be on the lookout for X3D patch which will be coming out later on the year (I am guessing).

Or play Russian Roulette - up to you :)

    Thanks...

I just upgraded from X2 to X3. Boy was that a process! Anyway, I am exploring X3 but the only editing or recording I am doing is in X2 until I am confident in X3.

UAD issues (and a few opening X2 projects in X3) have been thread topics with X3; so if you are about to finish something, I would recommend staying in X2 where you know it best. If you do open it in X3, definitely make a backup copy of that folder first and put X3 in the name of the file that you test in X3.

In what way?  Is it the installation?

Well backing up all the partitions... then...

The decompacting of the installation files (whatever you do don't run them offline!) takes time, the installation and registration of other plugins away from cakewalk, the rearrangement of plugins, the removal of old plugins, the rescanning of plugin, the troubleshooting of conflicting drivers or plugins (I had that), and cleaning up and defragging.

No complaints, just the way it is when you have a major update... but I wish they would have an online store to install this automatically (providing they gave us access to the install setup applications).

The upgrade to X3 Pro for me went very smoothly. Smoother than the last 2 versions.

To be clear the trouble I had was nothing to do with Sonar or anything bundled with Sonar.

+1, My X3 upgrade was very smooth as well, and even "jumping right in" to using it was noticeably more stable.

My downloads were fast (I'm in the USA), and the install was painless for X3.

Don't re-install things you already have like Dim Pro and it will go faster.

Reset and scan plugins after install.

Check all your PC modules to make sure you've got them all.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

My point is you don't know what's gonna happen really. Some people have good experiences and some people have bad. This is all down to their environment. You don't have the same environment as everybody else, so I suggest waiting till your project is done if it is critical and then go for it.

My upgrade from X2 to X3 went flawlessly - no issues.

For what it's worth, I also have an old UAD-1 (yes.. "1") card and a few projects that were in various stages of completion - no issues with any of them.

So you do a clean install of Sonar and remove all traces of X2?  I just add it to my other versions of Sonar.  I think I still have S7 on this machine. The program itself doesn't use a lot of space.

Yup I keep the previous Sonar versions, I don't uninstall. More hassle than it's worth. The plugins though are another matter.

My install of X3 was painless. If you keep X2 then just do the custom install and uncheck any of the features in X3 that you already have in X2. BE AWARE! If you ever uninstall X2 you will murder X3 in the process because it will be looking for the plug you had in X2. I did my install this way and it was a matter of minutes I was using X3.

Sonar Platinum, Sonar X3e, Sonar X2a , Sonar X1 Expanded and 8.5.3 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 10 on a Toshiba P75-A7200 Laptop with i7 @ 2.4 quad and 8 gigs of RAM and secondary WD 1 Tb drive, Windows 10 desktop, Asus i5 @ 3.2 quad, 12 gigs RAM, 1 Tb drive, 1 500 gig drive, MOTU 24io, 2 Roland Studio Captures, Saffire 6 USB for laptop, Soundtracs Topaz Project 8 mixer, Alesis Monitor 2s, Event BAS 20/20s, Roland Micro-Monitor BA-8s, and 45 years worth of collecting FX, Mics, Amps, Guitars, and Keyboards!
