X3 "input noise" that isn't there in X2

I know this will likely be a snipe hunt BUT: On every project I open in X3 there are is a buzzing on one or more audio tracks, sometimes on a virtual instrument track, like I have a live audio input channel being monitored. Except I don't. The background noise registered on the channel meter. Muting the track(s) removes the noise but then I can't hear the source tracks (obviously). There are no busses with open inputs, there are no common plug-ins it's very strange. Opening the exact same projects in X2 - *no* noise.  I've tried 3 different audio interfaces - the behavior is consistent across all of them.

It's driving me crazy. Any ideas?

HP Envy 17 Quad-core i7, 16GB RAM, Dual 256GB Samsung SSDs. X2B, X3C, minimal 3rd party plugs.

Make sure Preferences > Audio > Driver Settings "64-bit Double Precision Engine" is not checked. It is a known bug.
