Single MIDI source for multiple VSTi's

Hello, is there an efficient way to set up one MIDI source track for multiple soft synth/VSTi tracks? This seems very simple, I'm just struggling with how to do it. I want to do this for layering, and want to have only MIDI track that I have to mess with in PRV.

Thank you,

Todd

    No it is not supported.

You can copy the MIDI and paste it to new tracks and those you can route to new VSTis.

For MIDI playback (not for live play):
"Copy" - "Paste Special" - tick "Link to Orignal Clip(s)"

The pasted MIDI track(s) will then be identical with the original clip, and edits are automatically applied to all copies.

Thanks all.  I've done the copy/paste special/link to original before.  I was hoping there was a cleaner way to do this.  Oh well, I'll keep on doing it that way.

I could swear that when I first went through the Sonar manual back when I bought X1, it demonstrated a way to do this. Perhaps in one of the tutorials near the beginning. Maybe I dreamed it?

I believe you can "play" multiple synths in real-time by enabling their Input Echo buttons...  maybe this is what you had read?

Ah, perhaps that was it yes. I remember following some instructions and playing layered sounds, even if I didn't fully understand what was going on at the time.

It would seem that a trk could output midi info it has recorded on it to a assigned midi channel, at the very least.

But because of internal routings it can't be done. Maybe I'm just over simplifying it and thinking it should be easy.

It does Grem. Perhaps you mean track. A MIDI channel is not the same as a track.

is there an efficient way to set up one MIDI source track for multiple soft synth/VSTi tracks?

Use a virtual MIDI cable (like LoopBe).

Thanks b rock.  I have "loopMIDI" installed but I can't get that to work inside X2P.  Which "LoopBE" are you using, 1 or 30?

Xlutop Chainer will also allow you to stack MIDI synths to respond to a single MIDI input, as will a few other plugins.  See the thread here:

    LoopBe1.

I have "loopMIDI" installed but I can't get that to work inside X2P.

You're going to want to stay away from default "All Inputs - Omni" or "None" for the MIDI Inputs.  It will create a MIDI feedback loop back into the LoopBe (as well as your targeted synths).  Use a specific MIDI channel to route the MIDI track to all of your synths.

Check your LoopBe systray icon (right-click) that's created with the LoopBe installation.  If you managed to start a MIDI feedback loop during experimentation, you may have "Mute" checked there as a safeguard.  Just Unmute it (after setting up a single MIDI channel routing scheme).

I don't really understand the purpose to be honest. You can put all midi tracks inside a folder if you don't like looking at them. And you can, as suggested, link the clips. If you want to record to several tracks at once you can even do that. Having the tracks separately allows you to adjust simple settings such as transposition, channel, etc. This would otherwise become a problem.

    Thanks b rock.

Sanderxpander, it's probably a matter of workflow.  Having a bunch of linked clips may work for you, I just don't prefer it.  And, this is for layering only, so only need a single MIDI source track.
