Mixer ignorance!

Hi
Can anyone help me with a mixing problem please. Although I have had my kit for years, I have not used it regularly and never worked this one out.

I’ve got some fairly old gear, Behringer MX1604A mixer, TC Electronic M300 multi efx, Alesis 3630 compressor. Guitar and Rode NT1-A.

I’ve got the 3630 on Aux1 and the M300 on Aux2. I send the main O/Ps of the mixer to my soundcard. Note, I have recently updated my recording software from Home Studio 9 to MC6 and realize that I may need to get an audio interface if I start using synths etc. I have been using an old (you getting the gist by now) Yamaha CBX-K3 keyboard and TG100 GM sound module.

The output of the soundcard comes back to the mixer so that I can record a new audio track while listening to the recorded ones. That channel is sent to Alt3/4 so that it doesn’t get recorded again.

All is fine if I record wet signals (e.g. with reverb) but how can I monitor a wet track and record it dry e.g. for vocals.

I’m stumped! Even with an audio interface I may still keep the MX1604 and effects so I need to know if it is possible.

Thanks

So you're using the built-in effects within the mixer? If so, you'll have to find an output that doesn't go to the main bus for recording the dry signal. Take a look at the mixer's block diagram. There is usually such a signal path available. There may be, for example, one or two aux busses you can run to the audio interface rather than using the main outs.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks bitflipper. The effects are not built in but are connected to the 2 Aux busses. The cct diagram in the manual isn't very clear but I did look around to see how the aux busses actually operate. I came up with a solution! Instead of routing the the outputs from the M300 back to the aux stereo returns I have inserted them into a spare stereo channel. I now have that routed to Alt 3/4 for monitoring but the signal going to the main mix is dry.
    Thanks!
