Are there any major differences between....
...the PC4K S-Type Channel Compressor and the PC4K S-Type Bus Compressor? Do I really need another compressor in Sonar? Cheers Mark

Yes, there is a difference. Initially I didn't use the PC4k channel compressor that much, but, having spent some time playing around with it, I now really like it. I wouldn't want to be without it. It sounds/works differently to the other PC compressors, but just took me longer to set up well. The gain reduction LEDs aren't much use, IMO, so you really need to use your ears. I probably don't use it as often as some of the others. Having said that, it works far better on some material .

"Do I really need another compressor in Sonar?" You already have the Sonitus Comp and the PC76, so you can make tries. I don't know if the special offer is closed for the Concrete Limiter ; if not, you could look at it.

Yes they are very different. I use the channel compressor to tame guitar levels or other very dynamic signals. Works beautifully. The buss compressor as the name implies is used on the master buss or submix busses to "glue" several signals together and it does this very well. I would definitely jump on the 50% off deal!

Great advice here that I totally agree with. PC4K Bus Compressor is for gluing of bus material together and creating that "sounds like a commercial record" vibe. The PC4K Channel Compressor, while it takes some getting used to, is quite good for totally transparent dynamic compression of keyboards, guitars and similar type material with slower attacks and longer sustains.

I know I could have been nicer and more informative but I hoped it would be incentive to look on Cakewalk's site. http://www.cakewalk.com/P...nnel-vs-Bus-CompressorLots of info already available without us needing to rehash it. So that was the first part of my reply. As for your second question, how are we supposed to know if you need another compressor? If you have the tools you need, I don't see why you would. If you don't, then probably. None of us can answer that question. If you don't understand the tools you already have, I would recommend you learn them first before buying more. I'm not saying that to sound like an ass, I'm saying that to save you money.

Yup. At $99 I figured I might as well go ahead and get it now. I'll figure out how to use it as I go :) Sanderxpander

Thanks for the link. I've done a lot of searching through the site on numerous topics but hadn't found that one. As for your first reply I still find it pointless. I've not asked anyone to rehash anything they didn't feel they wanted to rehash. As far as my understanding of the tools goes I would consider myself to be reasonably aware of what certain tools do and how to apply them. While I've had Sonar since 7 Producer, through 8.5, X1 and now X3, I've not really used it very much but am now working through numerous tutorials and exercises to get myself familiar with it. I'm getting there but I imagine I'll be learning for a long time to come and will no doubt ask quite few more questions on here. Feel free not to bother answering them. Moving right along.....................

"Yup. At $99 I figured I might as well go ahead and get it now. I'll figure out how to use it as I go :)" Good choice, I think. Make tries (you have now 4 comps : PC4K Channel Comp, PC76, CA-2A, Sonitus + the PC4K Bus comp). For example, you can use on vocal tracks two compressors one after the other (PC76 followed by CA-2A), with low gain reduction for each of both comps.

Yeah, I've just been going through a Groove 3 tutorial on compression which has certainly opened my eyes to new possibilities. Looking forward to the experiments :)

Soft Enerji, I really didn't mean to offend. I have answered plenty of questions on this forum in what I think was a helpful way. I admit my initial reply to you was not very helpful. I've maybe seen too many questions I perceive as "lazy" and they spark me into answers like that. I feel in order to get some help, the Asker should put in a basic effort on their part first.
However, you're right, it's no fault of yours - a question is a question and everybody starts somewhere else. So, sorry, and in the future I will simply refrain from replying. Good luck with your new purchase! In case you're still in doubt, I really mean that.
