Installing older versions of Sonar
My PC is only a few months old so I only have X1 Producer Expanded and X3 Producer installed. If I wanted to also install Sonar 7 Producer and 8.5 Producer can I do that? I wouldn't have to uninstall everything and then in reinstall each program in order would I? The only reason I want to do this is that there's some stuff I vaguely remember from version 7 that I want to refer back to. Cheers Mark

Each version installs (and runs) separately, so you can install older versions. I installed SONAR 7 Pro on this machine to check something after I had X1d loaded. I think I forced it to install to folders I do NOT use now to make sure it didn't overwrite any plug-ins on me though.

I have heard others report problems with installing earlier versions on top of newer versions. I have not done it myself, so cannot comment personally. I think it had something to do with older versions replacing newer components with older ones. I guess not even Cakewalk can be forwards compatible. As I said, though, this was only on the advice of others, as I have no personal experience.

Hmmmmm 3 replies that make me a bit wary. I think what I'll do is install 7 and 8.5 on my laptop until I find what I wanna find then leave it at that. Thanks guys! CakeAlexs. Love the Tommy Cooper Avatar :-) Just like that......................

A related question if I may. I upgraded from X1P to X2P but never installed. Now I've installed X3cP. I understand X2 had R-Mix, but X3 does not, so I'd like to add it from the X2 downloads. Does anyone remember which install file(s) contain it, and whether I can select for it alone. (I don't recall whether the custom install option permits installation of a single plug, but maybe it does?) And is this also a bad idea? Thx, Ron

You have to download all 4 parts of the SONAR_X2_Producer to run the advanced install in order to get R-Mix.

To the OP, SONAR installers only overwrite older files. That is one of the reasons files and registry entries have to be removed before reinstalling the same version. That said, I perform advanced installs when adding older versions selecting the components to install.

Ok, thanks, yes, I have all 4 parts. The question then is can I select for only R-Mix (and absolutely nothing else)? From your post to the OP, sounds like my concern about whether doing so would jeopardize the existing X3 install is unfounded. scook You have to download all 4 parts of the SONAR_X2_Producer to run the advanced install in order to get R-Mix.

Yes, running the advanced install will give you the option to install individual plug-ins such as R-Mix. Make sure to deselect everything else when the component dialog is displayed.

Has anyone had experience with R-Mix running in X3c? I never used it in X2a but I do have a few hip-hop clients that like to use these kind of toys. X3c is running so good I'm afraid to screw around with it too much.

This should be a separate thread, it could be a good topic. Anyway I tried R-Mix, I just couldn't get it to work for me. The fact it is no longer with X3 speaks bundles to me (did you see what I did there? ). Why not Melodyne?

R-Mix works fine in X3c. Not sure how Melodyne replaces R-Mix, maybe you are thinking of V-Vocal. I would imagine the reason V-Vocal and R-Mix are not included with X3 has more to do with the expense of licensing than any other consideration. They are Roland products.

Well Melodyne can remove vocals from a track for instance, and R-Mix is supposed to do that. After studying the videos etc I couldn't get that to work particularly well, but with Melodyne (Editor version) works. In fact I couldn't really see any advantage R-Mix had over other plugins. Also R-Mix's engine often crashed (had to stop and start the plugin often). Maybe I do it a disservice but I came to view it as crapware. Also I don't see any use for V-Vocal nowadays with Melodyne around. And yes makes sense if R-Mix wasn't transferred as part of the Gibson deal. (sorry I sense a thread hijack ).

CakeAlexS Well Melodyne can remove vocals from a track for instance, and R-Mix is supposed to do that.
I have used R-Mix often to remove vocals from final (commercial) recordings and it works very well for this purpose. Some songs have the lead vocals panned slightly, and R-Mix allows for visual adjustment of this. One technique I have found that works well with this specific application is being as precise as possible... and this can often be achieved best by 2-3 successive iterations of R-Mix with smaller, overlapping target areas, rather than only one R-Mix instance with too large of a target area (that can deaden the "non-vocals" on you).

I played around with using R-Mix as a filter on some tracks. It's pretty interesting using it that way. You can write in the automation to move the target box around in the window. I think there is a tutorial in Sonar U. that shows it being used this way on a drum track.

Just a quick thank you to scook! It worked, just as you say. I'd forgotten the custom install permits choosing a single or any combo of all the plugins in that version. You do have to wait for all the files to unpack, but apparently nothing else got installed except an X2 uninstaller and some X2 links in the start menu (which don't work of course.) Sorry OP for hopping on your thread. Maybe our combined questions will help future searchers. -Ron scook Yes, running the advanced install will give you the option to install individual plug-ins such as R-Mix. No worries at all. My question was answered anyway. I installed 7 on my laptop, found what I was looking for and uninstalled it again. Tell ya what though, 7 looks so dated now :-)
