First serious attempt working with Softsynths in X3c and it's crashes. crashes crashes.
I've been working with Rapture 64 bit, Dimension Pro 64 Bit and the Zeta 2.1. I'm able to record the parts without any hassles, I can then convert them to tracks no problem. Further down the line when I'm doing some random editing, SONAR crashes. Luckily I can still open one of the projects but when I try to save that project again I get the dreaded "Unable to save file - Disk is full. The only way I can get around this is to bounce to tracks as soon as I've finished recording the part and then delete the softsynth. Once deleted I save the project, close SONAR and then reopen and carry on working. Not a great way to be productive. I can reproduce this crash virtually everytime. I went back to X2a and couldn't reproduce it there so it looks like something in X3c. I must say that no other version of SONAR has ever been this unstable on my system. I want to do some more investigation and then will send the info to Cakewalk. Not sure how reliable that will be since I haven't has a single response to my query with support about a month ago but I'll send it anyway. Cheers, Peter.

what's your system specs? and can you give steps to reproduce, ideally from a new blank project?

Disk is full? How full are your hard drives? Check your hard disk read/write caches in Preferences (they may need to be increased). When editing, mixing or pretty much anything other than live tracking it's a good idea to increase your interface audio buffers because latency doesn't matter while doing those things and it will be less taxing on your system which means less crashes. Just some things to look at. Cheers.

Oh and just to add to that... I had increased the hard disk cache in X2 and those settings did NOT transfer over to X3. They went back to the default. That may be a per project thing but I only noticed it after installing X3. Another thing that might help pin down the problem is inserting the Performance module into the control bar and seeing what and when things are maxing out. Cheers.

Hmmm...I've never had a Rapture crash or any instability, and I've been using it since the beginning. I use it on pretty much every song in some capacity. How does this instability manifest itself?

I keep hearing about the instability of Rapture too, but have never seen it. Can't recall it ever crashing. i must be lucky. In any case, even f Rapture itself is unstable, that does not help the OP's problem since it seems to apply across other synths. Can you take us through process step by step and do you have a project file you could share?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Much appreciated. My drives have about 250 Gb free and have been defragged fairly regularly. I don't think that is the problem. I can happily work for days on end with no hassles.....until I use soft synths. As soon as I record a soft synth a bit further down the road I will have a crash. As soon as I experience a crash I cannot save the file. I get the disk full error. I must stress that the crash is not related to one particular soft synth but to Rapture, Dimension Pro, Zeta 2.1. etc. I'm in the middle of a big project that I have to finish so I don't want to take any chances with crashes until it's safely backed up. When I'm done I'll create a crash and post the error message. Don't know if it'll help but who knows? My system: Quad Core processor 6600Hz Ram 6 Gb ! Mb Nvidia display card 2 x M Audio Delta 1010s (ASIO enabled) I did try WDM but had the same crashes. 3 X 500 Gb drives Windows 7 64 Bit SONAR X3c (64 bit) Cheers, Peter.

Your post is concerning with the repeatability of it. Have you tried re-installing the X3c patch? Just to be sure, I would recommend downloading it again rather than use the patch file you used initially (in case you still have it on your machine).

Mike, without getting off topic I thought your issue on the other thread/s was related to one plugin which you saw in the event viewer? I don't experience any issues with X3E. The chances of your issue being similar to OP I think would be slim here. There can be many causes with similar symptoms in this scenario.
Cheers.

I've never had a soft synth problem w/ any SONAR except 32 bit synths on a 64 bit computer. I'd make sure you are running all 64 bit for Rapture etc. Other than that, I'm stumped. @

Thanks AT - I'm sure Sonar is rock solid for the majority of users. I'm stumped too however awaiting feedback from Camel Audio with regard to my Alchemy crash over on my other post about Soft Synth projects. There are so many factors involved but I've followed lots of tutorials about having a bare-bones Windows 7 system, am using a tidy Audio Interface, have all drivers/bios/firmware up-to-date and have bugger all installed on my system as it's for music making only. I'd love to know if Cakewalk actually recommend a set system - CPU, disk, RAM, motherboard, audio interface etc. Lots of issues with bus powered 2x2 midi interfaces as well. I know I'm technically on the wrong post here but was interested in the OP solution.

I was wondering why the OP never followed up, I hate unresolved issues. But it would seem his issue was a bug in X3C and was fixed. I gleaned this by looking at his recent posts and he chimed in on a similar thread about disk full error. http://forum.cakewalk.com/Help-Can-not-write-file-disk-may-be-full-m3021400.aspx#3021924 So your issue is not related to the original topic. Your issue sounds like a bad computer config. Firewire? you should have a second HD 7200 RPM. Run the DPCLAT test and look for background issues etc.

That is really frustrating, MM. I've had some problems w/ some third party synths, free ware and such. Never had a problem w/ alchemy, though, other than trying to understand it for programming ;-) Looking at your specs, I have the novation too and it put automap on my computer which I really didn't want. I'm wondering if that has introduced some weirdness in midi? It seems to be a universal midi problem if it is happening w/ all your synths. And you have put it in bug report w/ Cake, haven't you? It looks a bit beyond the user forum common knowledge. Best wishes, @

Right now Mike I think your issue is specifically alchemy. If you have any further issues after removing alchemy may I suggest you let us know on the other thread where your specific issue is being troubleshooted in order to avoid confusion. We need to nail down your specific problems. I don't believe you should have any issues with your hardware and your specific problem is unlikely to be Sonar. But if it is maybe we can get to the bottom of it.

@MagicMike - I also think the discussion for your issues would be better served to remain in the other thread you started, so we don't have two sets of things to wade through in order to try to help you. If you wanted to perhaps post a permalink to this thread into your other thread, then folks could still tie them together, if they wanted to. I would like you to elaborate on the kinds of crashes and hanging systems and such that you are/were experiencing when using soft synths, as that is quite unusual - just please do do in your other thread. Thanks, Bob Bone
