Help me! - Tell me Waves SSL sucks please.
I all, so, Black WEEK (whatever happened to Friday?) has been crushing to my wallet (but oh so much fun!!!). The "last" plug-ins that are on my "I really want these" list are the Waves SSL. And wouldn't you know it, they are running a one day sale on Waves SSL at Audiodeluxe.com for $319.00! Please tell me that even at this price, these are some crappy plug-ins. Please tell me they won't place nice with Slate VCC or that that my Mercury Platinum purchase completely negates any need for SSL. HELP ME! PS: Oh crap, I just realized I have a $15 AD gift card too...

The SSL plugs are nice but, they're not the holy grail or anything. You will do just fine without them. Aren't they in the Mercury bundle?

SSL is not included in Mercury...but they are currently giving SSL with the purchase of FULL Mercury...not the upgrade... That being said, these are very nice plugs....while, no, they are not the be all and end all of plugs, they are probably the best SSL Emulation out there... But if I were you I'd wait if you don't just HAVE to have them, keep an eye out on KVR for a better price, or for another sale closer to the Saturnalia....

Oops, Leadfoot - I hadn't had my morning coffee when I posted. I have Platinum, not Mercury. :) I have heard that the SLL group is one of the best set of plugs that Waves produces. That said, I have a lot of other plugs and I'm really digging the Abbey Roads stuff - RS56, HLS, Kramer Sig, as well as the CLA classic comps. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if I'm already set. It seems that I gravitate to a more vintage vibe with the Abbey Roads stuff (I'm an old Pink Floyd fan) and perhaps the SSL is a different sound altogether rather than something to compliment what I already have... I picked up the Slate VCC and FG-X too (haven't arrived yet), as well as the Maag EQ4 (Which I really dig). Maybe before I got all of this the SLL would have been the bees knees, but now I'm wondering if it's a different set of crayons that I don't need for what I do...

Sounds like you have a nice palette of "colors" already. I think you should hold off for now. Just my opinion though. :)

If you've got Platinum already you can very easily live without the SSL bundle...very easily.

If I had an extra $319 to blow, a medium-fi bus compressor/EQ would be pretty darn low on the list. Well below groceries and gasoline. But if I was as rich as, say, yorolpal, and $319 was pocket change...nope, still wouldn't blow it on a channel strip.

The IK Multimedia British Suite is on sale at the moment for $60 at audiodeluxe and I have heard great things about that. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/trbritish/ To be honest I do think cake did a great job on their versions, but that just my opinion.

You have to have it. Your music will always suck if you don't have it. Your talent and skill are meaningless without the Waves SSL Bundle. Either get it or there's no place for you in the music business.

FINALLY SOME COMMON SENSE AND REASON!!!! LOL The IK British for $63 less $15 more from a gift card seems like an inexpensive way to get into some of the SLL sound. I won't be as cool as I would be if I had the Waves stuff though...

I used to think there was no replacement for Waves SSL -- nothing else gave me such snap and punch, particularly on drums -- but then I started experimenting and found I could pretty much duplicate that sound with other plugs. Waves' own RS56 EQ was a part of the recipe for the snare, for instance, as was the judicious use of transient designers. Now I no longer think it's a must-have, but I wouldn't say it's bad. I still think it's one of Waves' best plugins. But there are better values out there nowadays. For UAD users, that $300 would be much better spent on the API channel strip, IMHO. Cheers, Eddie

I went on a quest a few years ago for what I perceived was the best SSL emulations. I tried everything that was available at the time except IK's, I don't think it was available yet. I'm sure it is just a matter of taste and expectations, but the waves was the one I was least impressed with during the demo period. UAD's 4k buss, I was most impressed with but at the time I only had a UAD-1 and the updated demo worked on the 4K but was only available for purchase on UAD-2 cards. My second favorite demo at that time was SSL duende. I found a SSL duende card, for $150.00, on ebay that wasn't crossgraded and was able to crossgrade to the native for free. I love that channel strip, I also love the 4k buss, but I often use Cytomic "The Glue" more often than the SSL buss. If you want a great 4k emu, I would have to say "The Glue" is a must have.

As others have mentioned, you can live without the SSL Bundle. That said, the SSL Bundle is extremely utilitarian. I use it extensively on every mix... If you didn't already have a large collection of plugins, the SSL Bundle would certainly be a great choice.

The amount of plug-ins I have as a hobbyist (with little time to record at the moment) is a bit embarrassing. It sounds like the SSL would have been a good one to pick up before acquiring so many others. Maybe someday... :)

A "real" engineer can suck the bad out of your mix with nothing more than a broken checker, a chaw of tobacco and some dental floss. But don't ask me how.

I can save someone some $ if you have a spare PCI express slot. I have my old SSL Duende card sitting in my junk pile. It has already been crossgraded to native so no further plugs can be registered to it, but it comes bundled with the buss compressor and channel strip. Willing to sell cheap or trade for something cool ;)

Maybe I'm a dolt but I compared Duende (which I did not own but was on a stick) and UAD at one time and found them to be too close to call any major difference. At another time I compared Waves to UAD (both of which I own) and guess what? I found them to be too close to call any major difference. YMMV

Well the duende respect thesound way more than the Waves (it's simply because they don't emulate the same thing) and the Duende bus comp is really killing a lot of comp including imho the uad and the Waves (but again not a 4000 G comp).....

"I really want it" should rather be "I really need it" as was suggested before, though not mentioned in those words. If I had that kind of spare money to use, I would use it for something I need or to enhance food choice and consumption, especially if I already had plugins that suited me. Better take care of other things like the body or whatever else where it's REALLY necessary (possibly including helping another person, if you're doing fine yourself, or simply saving it for a better and necessary deal in the future) than for more toys to play with. Having written that, I fully understand the fun and joy of getting toys to play with :P EDIT: to answer your question: no, I don't have the IK British stuff.

I appreciate your feedback Jermaine. Last night I downloaded the Waves SSL and API demos. I compared the EQs in both and MUCH preferred the API for my music, and I found that it does do something special that my existing plugins don't quite do. I also compared the IK British compressor to the Waves SSL compress and they were VERY close to my ears (and both sounded great). I couldn't get the sounds I wanted from the API compressor, but clearly I just need to learn how to use this properly. I bought the API. :) I get to record my son's band in my studio next week, and I've sort of used that as an excuse to stock up on some new toys. I really want to do a great job for these talented kids. They have a sax and a female singer, which will be new to me. It certainly won't be the room, the plugs, or the equipment if they don't sound good!
