The brain is a terrible thing...
The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

Hard to imagine that even Goalies didn't have any protection - until 59, when the late great Jacques Plante received a puck in the face and decided to get back on the ice wearing a prototype mask he'd been using for practices (but had been forbidden to put on during actual games). I do remember guys without helmet, even well into the eighties. Heck, even when the helmet became standard, guys who wore the hockey visor to protect their eyes used to get ripped on. But no one mess w/ the cup. :P

Similar story in cricket Craig. Batsmen have worn leg 'pads' and a 'box' (= cup) for ever, but it's only been in the last 30 years that helmets have become popular. Thankfully, wearing a helmet is now compulsory for youngsters.

I think it's a case of deciding what you're willing to live without.

As history has proven, it's apparent that this is a no-brainer.

Clarified.

Wait - you mean my cup doesn't protect my brain?
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Fast forward to modern time and people are using technology to improve their brains with tCDS technology. Similar to Overclocking your brain.

As the owner of several so-called "experimental medical devices" (that I got when I was working on a PhD) I can't help but get a chuckle out of that. The FDA reserves the right to confiscate any or all of the devices I have since they haven't been FDA approved (well, most haven't - I think my EEG device has) but we all know that the FDA doesn't approve devices that are preventive or designed to improve what we have. They only approve things that cure a problem. Since there's no way that those things have gone through the extensive testing required to verify that they are safe to use, there's no way that they have been FDA approved and, therefore, can be confiscated at any whim of the FDA. I once knew a guy who's dream was to create an physical interface between a PC and the brain... Can you imagine? One bad Window's update and you'd end up with someone who's only fit for Congress!
