My latest production. Complex rock mix. 34 tracks, multiple overdubbed guitars/back vox
This band was really good. I told them I thought the song had a bit too much going on in it, but... It made the mix a challenge, to which I did my best. This was also a freaking rush job. For some reason they set & announced a release date to their fans prior to even coming in to start tracking and were really pushing to get it done on time (made NO damn sense to me either). So, this was mixed in 2 sittings, mastered by me during the 2nd sitting. Blown out and released the next day. The song is "We the People" http://www.reverbnation.c...-people-kytten-punched Slam my mix! Tell me your likes / dislikes. Thanks in advance.

Is it what the client wanted? as we all know the client is alway right, right? For me the vocal is a little buried other than that it does not sound bad, better ears than me to give advise here though. Thanks for sharing

Yep, it is what the client wanted and not bad for a rush job. You should have charged them double though for a rush job. Rush likes money too ad would have charged me double. Thanks for sharing. Peace and Blessings, John

They put you in a tight spot, but it sounds like you came through for them. The vocals do seem a bit on the darkside (eq wise) but that could be what they wanted. I'm amazed sometimes how people think this stuff is quick and easy.

Yes the band is absolutely ecstatic with it, they are going to come back in later in the spring to do somewhere between a long Ep or a short album.? The guitarist of this new found project is a good friend and I gave them a deal. A ridiculous one. I would be embarrassed to tell you how little I charged them on this one, and more so if I told you how many hours I have wrapped up in this one song... The whole flat rate of $____ per song isn't happening anymore after this project. It will be $___ per song with ___ hrs of tracking & ___ hours mixing, anything after that is $____ per hour.

I like the sound too. The only tiny critique would be the drums, they could use some more punch, especially the snare. I have continued watching and listening, I tip my hat to you in regards to your ability to play the drums, git, do some cool vocals and recording !You are a one man army!

Scotty & James - Thanks guys! I appreciate you taking the time to check it out! Tom - I hear ya. This thing (especially in the rush that it was) was a challenge. The one thing they asked for from before we started tracking was BIG DRUMS.... then they kept adding more guitar parts, the bass line is real active too, some of the guitars were kinda stepping on the vocal, bass stepping on the guitars, and the guitars fighting each other, the drums are really the most laid back performance/element in the whole song. As I started mixing, I pulled down all the faders and set up a HUGE sounding drum/bass mix! then as I pulled in all the guitars & vocals I had to make some sacrifices to fit it all in. Some of the presence on the snare/toms was among those unfortunately. If I had been given executive producer power over this project I'd have looked like a mad mechanic under the hood throwing parts over my shoulders... "well, we don't need that!.... This is outta here! ... need more room, see ya!" haha I assume by your comment that you watched the "Head in the Sand" video I did.? Thank you bud. The compliment is appreciated. =)

I have been playing guitar and singing about 23 years, drums about 20, bass around 18, Keys.... I don't remember but I don't practice that enough to consider myself any good at it really. Why? This song (above) was not me as far as the performances at all. I recorded, engineered, mixed, & pseudo mastered it.

yea! if they want EVERYTHING big, something needs to be lost somewhere - this simply doesn't work to have it all big! well, but again, I think you did well, especially keeping in mind what circumstances you had faced! and yes, this is the video I watched. pretty impressive. I am a singer, guitarist and bassist myself, but just can't play the drum for the hell of it If I had tons of time and the money for a kit I would love to learn it. What a great situation it must be to not have to rely on drum samplers but play the drums tracks by myself!

Chuck, tremendous job under the circumstances! I agree with you that the arrangement's not perfect, but you gave it cohesiveness anyway. It's not a bad song, but I bet that you'd like another shot at this, eh? All in all, nicely done.

Not my kind of music, so I think it's a tribute to your mixing, and maybe the song itself, that I got all the way through. I did really like the quality of the lead vocalist. With so many guitars happening I would've liked more creativity with the panning and level rides. I think the song could've worked better with the guitars moving into, and out from, the centre as their parts come to the fore in the song. Same with the level rides. I don't know what the band wanted so it's hard to know if you had any control over the structure. Good job , I like your style.

Minor crits: Lead vox seemed too low in the mix. At times the bass seemed muddy (mostly in the chorus). Overall it was a good mix.

sounds good to me Chuck. As far as the voc level goes, I think it's more of scooping out some of the mids in the verse guitars. There is a definate clearer (less mids) tonal shift when the chorus kiks in. Nice work. Their happy, be happy....

The songs below this sound MUCH better. If they would have given you more time THEY could have gotten a much better product (Like the ones you did below that one)...At any rate for a quick job it does sound good. Vocals seem a little low, but all in all nice job...

Nonat - Thanks & No, It was not nearly enough. Herb- Thanks yeah.... After completion, it was kinda cool. =) Dub- Thanks, yep in retrospect it could have used probably another +.5db on the vocal. Tom- Thanks, Being able to play it all is a blessing and a curse.... You write the guitar and vocal for instance and bring it to your band to become a full song.... But the drums or bass they put on it is never quite right because well... It's not what you have in your head and so it is often tough to let go. Lynn- yes sir, I wish I had been giving ANY producer control on this.... It was a rush, hurry, high tension deal. Given more time, the ability to help them with the arrangement/accompaniment This could rock a good bit harder. E.routt - Heh, thanks bud. All I can say is it takes time and practice. I still have a billion miles to go and much to learn, we all do. If ya play billiards a lot, you get better at it. Same for recording & mixing man, keep at it! Rebel- Well thanks for listening then! I did my best, I had about 31 hours in this inside a week with tracking/mix/master (on top of my other businesses normal work week, My wife and kids, my band had a gig, and thanksgiving) and at $200.... At some point you have to sit back and call it done. The lead guitarist has been my best friend since we were idunno 13 yrs old. I gave them a deal, but it took even longer than I thought and was a much busier song, mix, and more tracks then I anticipated. When it sounded pretty good, they were happy, and I realized that I was now under $6.50 an hour..... I said well, ehhhh I could still do this, or that, etc. but this b!t@h is done!!! Bapu- Vox= admittedly, you are right. Bass... in the verse listen to that again man, Ya got the vocal on top, rhythm guitar cranking along, lead guitar busy as hell and stepping on both the vocal, and the other guitar, then the bass player is walking all over too. Sue me. Somebody had to sit in the back seat to get everyone in the car! Timidi -Thanks man. Pat - Thanks for listening man, I wish I had been given the luxury of time too.

I know exactly what you mean, I just meant that even within the EQ, there were sacrifices I felt had to be made by the guitars for the sake of the more important vocals, by the bass for the more important guitars etc. When I started the mix I pulled everything down, put up the drums first, tweaked, then bass dialed it in, then guitars, vocals etc.... then went back and changed everything else I had already done on the drums and bass as there was not the room I hoped to have. I think I as I continue to improve, I may well look back on this mix a couple years from now and be embarrassed that I should have done a little better. I can tell you that on the next project when it looks like there is a lot of "traffic" in the mix I will put up a 5 minute level only mix, listen to determine what is important and work from the front of the stage backwards. In this case meaning I would pull up or dim solo the vocal, get it where I wanted it, then pull up guitars around it, snuggle them in, then bass/drums etc. The polar opposite of what I did here.
