Windows Media Player won't play simultaneously with Sonar in WIN 7

Occasionally I like to play a wav file or mp3 using Win Media Player while also playing sonar, so I can match a tempo. In other words, if I need to demo a song, I want to find out the exact tempo, so I'll play the wav or mp3 using Win Media Player and then hit play on Sonar so my drum loop will play along with the mp3. I keep adjusting the tempo until I match it.

In XP this has worked fine. But using 8.53 and Win7, I can't get Windows Media Player to play simultaneously with Sonar.  In Sonar I have checked the box for "sharing audio drivers". Does anyone know how to fix this? Or is there a better simple audio player to use that's less quirky?

Hi. VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html) is what I've used for some years. Can run both it and Sonar 8.5.3 simultaneously

Why not just drag your reference track into Sonar?

Verify the Windows Control Panel Sound Properties dialog Advanced tab "Allow application to take exclusive control of this device" is not checked for the interface.

I just tried it and ran into the same problem. I can't play them both at the same time. Are you using Win 7? XP does this fine.

It was checked. I unchecked it and that didn't work either. In fact it made it so that even after I closed Win Med Player, Sonar still wouldn't play. I got the Sonar error message each time and had to close and reopen Sonar to get Sonar to play again.

At this point that's the only solution I've been using, which is ok. I just prefer to do it the other way if I can.
