What is Steam?

I just read a post where someone asks if they can convert their license for X3 to Steam.
 
What is Steam.
 
Why would you use it?
 
How does it work?
 
Again, what is it?
 
I googled it and all I found was something about a multi-media gaming something or other.

    @48/24 & 128 buffers latency is 367 with offset of 38.

    it's a distributor method for games.. and other things now (sonar)..
     
    gog is another one I like, and you get some freebie games when you sign up.. I'd mention humble bundle also, which is a good way to get games at a good price.
