Melodyne workflow: thoughts so far

Despite being totally stoked about Melodyne in X3 I haven't used it really, mostly because I'm at a point in the mixing process where I haven't yet needed to. But tonight I got to fire it up and play with it. I haven't used Melodyne in some time so I had a brief bit of relearning...but watching the Cake vid on it had me zooming along in no time.

The following are some questions that came to mind, wondering if there are answers or thoughts about it:

1: How do you folks use it on multiple tracks? Nearly always when I'm using this I'm tweaking more than one track's worth of audio. X3 pops each instance up in the Multi-dock, which is...okay. I kind of kept wanting to stack different melodyne panes above another similar to the Track View, so I could visually see the different clip's worth of melodyne panes. As it is I have to keep toggling back and forth.

2: Am I missing how to adjust not the blob but the, er, waver? That squiggly line (I want to call it formant but not sure if that's right) that runs through the blobs like a vein and helps smooth out transitions between blobs. I can't find any tool to adjust it.

3: Inside take lanes, bouncing down a Melodyne cips makes the freshly rendered clip(s) jump all over the place. In my experience, they all go to the bottom, and if there's multiple clips they'll just stack on each other. I thought we solved all that rigamarole with the new take lanes?

4: Melodyne is surprisingly bad at analyzing blobs. Every time I've used I've had to go into edit mode and split blobs and re-target their pitch since melodyne gets them an octave off. Strange.

Sounds like you're looking for what in V-Vocal would be the draw tool. There isn't one in Melodyne and it doesn't seem that it's just because we've got the junior version as I can't see that function in the editor version either, which has given me a bit of a dilemma whether to take the upgrade deal or not. Seems like a fairly basic thing to be missing from what is supposed to be the best. Maybe it is there and I just haven't figured it out yet, but I haven't seen any reference to it in their tutorial vids.

I'm using Editor so I'm not sure if this feature is in the scaled down version that come with X3.....but.... in Editor if you click and hold the Pitch Tool you will get a dropdown.  The center one is the Pitch Modulation Tool.  Select that tool and point into the center a blob (or blobs) and the cursor should change.  Click hold and drag up or down should get you the result that you're looking for to adjust the "vibrato" or modulation that has been detected within the selection.

^unfortunately that feature is not in the included version.  V-vocal does seem to work better than it previously under ARA so that is an option.

Yes thank you. That is what I remember now and yes I do not think the cut-down version included with SONAR includes that. Argh!

Yeah, it helps with most of it, but it's not quite the same thing as a freehand draw tool though. Maybe it's me not being used to it, but there are little bits in between "blobs" that it can't do because the line I want to alter is not totally within the blob. I really wish they didn't call them blobs. Not the most musical of terms , is it? ;)
