Recording internet stream directly into Sonar
Is it possible to record sound directly from the internet (live as its playing) directly into a Sonar track? I don't get it to work, although logically I just need to select the correct input right ... or ...? I'm using a Motu Ultralite MKIII.

Unless your interface has a "loopback" feature you'll have to use cables to create the loop and use one of the other driver modes because I don't think ASIO will allow two programs to use the same interface. Easiest way would be to have the stream coming from a separate computer. Example: When and if I try this I'll have a mini jack to RCA adapter plugged into my laptop, then RCA to 1/4" adapters which then get plugged into the interface and recorded into a stereo track. I've had some people tell me other ways but IIRC they require another program such as Audacity (I think). Then you can take the wav/mp3/whatever file that program creates and toss it into Sonar.

This got me thinking though... I wonder if Pyro can do this without hardwiring anything. I picked it up on special a while back and haven't played with it much yet. hmm...

Ah yes, the loopback. I used to use a Focusrite Sapphire that had that function. I can actually do it using Soundforge then import the file - I just wanted to miss out that step, but now I understand why its not so straight forward. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, it sounds like a handy feature and it almost swayed my interface choice. The Scarlett 8i6 had the loopback feature but the 18i6 had more physical inputs. I figured I'd better get the one with more inputs. And I may have confused Audacity with Soundforge. I know SF was mentioned when I inquired about this many moons ago.

You can also loop from one sound interface (onboard audio) into an ASIO interface being used by SONAR. Again that is a physical loopback (cable required), but allows for SONAR to use ASIO on the recording interface.

There is a program called VAC (Virtual Audio Cable) which allows you to route audio between programs. It will do what you want.

I record streaming audio from the Internet, but I use my PC's audio (RealTek on this machine) and usually Goldwave. As previously mentioned Audacity will also record from the PC's sound. You have to have the "Stereo Mix" (called "System Mixer" on older systems, and SoundBlaster calls this function "What You Hear") set as the default recording device, in the Sound Panel/Recording Section. Many PC's have this but it is not enabled (or displayed) in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound/Recording Panel. If it is not displayed, RIGHT click in an empty space in the panel and then LEFT click to display Disconnected and Disabled Devices. If the Stereo Mix now shows up you can enable it and make it the default recording device.

Depends on the soundcard. EMU could do it by routing through the patchmix software. A lot can't though. Plenty of good workarounds suggested already.

This is what I do...easy because I have a patch panel in my rack that maps all the I/O from module backs. Use the built in Realtek to stream whatever, and hard patch it into an input on my Focusrite. The Focusrite has internal loopback, but multi-use ASIO was glitchy.

I too use my on board sound card (Realtek) to record off the internet. But I use Sony Vegas Pro to record so I don't have to change my audio interface settings in Sonar. You can then drag the audio file into Sonar if you want.

You'll need to use ASIO 4 ALL if using ASIO drivers in Sonar tho, otherwise you'll have to put Sonar into WDM mode.

ASIO4ALL does not work with ASIO drivers. It only works with MME and WDM drivers making them appear to be ASIO drivers.
It was written at a time when lots of hardware required ASIO drivers and not many were available. It acts as a wrapper.
VAC works OK with ASIO drivers because VAC joins software not drivers or hardware.

I use my phone to stream into my DAW. I just bought a stereo ⅛ inch to two ¼ inch mono Y cable to go from my headphone input on the phone into my interface. Works great!

I found the methods above not to work with Windows 8, so bought Total Recorder ( www.totalrecorder.com) which I owned years back and seems to do the trick. Then I can import into Sonar.

I usually keep a 1/8" stereo cable hooked to a pair of inputs on my DAW, so that whenever I need to bring any consumer audio (phones, ipods, etc) into SONAR, it's as simple as selecting the correct inputs to record from. In the case of needing to record the PC's audio, I just plug the cable into the headphone jack on the front of the case. -e.B
