Intermittent process crashing when saving and closing sonar since x3d

Hi,

Edit: Oh Merry Xmas all!!!

Not sure if anyone else has reported this before, if it has, and is known problem then please ignore...

Since applying x3d - I'm finding (on intermittent occasions) sonar will crash with access violation.  This happenes when after saving a project, then once saved I click to close sonar down (exit sonar).

I see a popup dialog error report to send file to cakewalk and behind this dialog several other dialog boxes keep popping up (behind the send report message)..  When I click on send it fails to send and after clicking close button on the send report all these dialog boxes disappear..

I went over one of the mini dumps and see access violation is occurring, I can see some system calls on closing document stand true...

I'm working on a simple project using midi tracks (2 drum tracks and 1 bass) and added audio effects to the mapped synths - nothing fancy as I'm just learning still...  The project loads no problem even after the crash and later can save and close - no issues, just happens intermittently...

Have the latest Anti-Virus software (McAfee) and also Win 8.1, nothing else I think would interfere..

Re: Intermittent process crashing when saving and closing sonar since x3d 2013/12/25 19:45:30 (permalink)
Hi Jim

Firstly that is one of the best bug reports I've seen filed in these forums... Thankyou...

So you might want to turn off McAffee (temporarily!), or at least set appropriate exclusions for realtime scanning for your project and content folders, and what MS recommends:

C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\Logs\res*.log
C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\Logs\res*.jrs
C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\Logs\edb.chk
C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\Logs\Tmp.edb
c:\windows\Security\Database\*.edb
c:\windows\Security\Database\*.sdb
c:\windows\Security\Database\*.log
c:\windows\Security\Database\*.chk
c:\windows\Security\Database\*.jrs
C:\ProgramData\NTUser.pol
C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy\Registry.pol

So in your dump I notice this:

 Play Timing Master ASIO4ALL v2 LineOut 1
 Record Timing Master ASIO4ALL v2 MicIn4 1

I would recommend removing ASIO4ALL.
As you have a Scarlett I'm not sure why you would need it.
Others may want to expand...

Cheers...

Hi Alex,

Merry Xmas mate!

These are only comments setup in the dump analysis, and the reason I use ASIO4ALL is because I have the USB Mic and also USB Keyboard/Controller, if I don't use ASIAO4ALL I run into so many other difficulties, sonar renders useless - I know if I'm to be serious with using sonar I'll need to sit down and figure out best equipment to use, I kind of went into this head first without really thinking about the equipment first.

Yeah I was thinking to disable McAffee, or at least configure it to skip scanning my projects areas..

I thought to report this just so in case others are seeing the same problem too should also report it, strangely this problem seems to have started since x3d or at least now it s being caught in an unknown exception where it may have been handled better in x3c...

Have you tried downloading and running Dependency Walker?

The reason I am asking is that there have been some recent threads where Dependency Walker has shown some Microsoft redistributibles to be out of date, and they were also having access violation errors.  It also found some drivers that were out of date, if memory serves.

While the above is certainly not the only way that can happen, it is a really easy thing to diagnose, as all you have to do is download and run Dependency Walker, upload the file to somewhere we can look at it and post the link to it for us to review.

The antivirus temporary suspension is also a good and quick test of this error condition, as well.

In addition, I believe I have seen this error come from cases of installing Sonar or maintenance to it without the Run As Administrator option explicitly set for the install launch.  (I recommend doing the Dependency Walker and temporary suspension of your antivirus software first though)

So, I recommend the first two things above, and I will look for a post of your Dependency Walker output file.

I must also say I too do not understand your use of ASIO4ALL, if you have an interface that can run ASIO (unless I have that wrong).

Here is the link to Dependency Walker: http://www.dependencywalker.com/

The Scarlett 2i2 has 2 ins and outs, so why don't you use its ASIO drivers?

Re: Intermittent process crashing when saving and closing sonar since x3d 2013/12/25 20:46:43 (permalink)
Also, I did some searching, and as you have listed Windows 8.1 as your OS version, I looked for any info on issues with it and your Focusrite interface.

The Focusrite site indicates only that your interface is compatible with Windows 8, and not 8.1 - that's what prompted me to search for info.

I found the following, which is from November, 2013, posted elsewhere from a Focusrite support guy:

" There are no known compatibility issues with Windows 8, our drivers are thoroughly tested on this OS. Unfortunately, we can't guarantee Windows 8.1 compatibility as of yet, but we've had no significant error reports from our users. Please see our compatibility chart for the 2i2:

http://uk.focusrite.com/downloads/os...t=Scarlett+2i2

Ultimately, a very small percentage of our customers will have problems across our product range (this is to be expected), since everyone's computer setup is so drastically different (hardware + software). We urge any customer who is having issues to contact us via email so we can help to diagnose and resolve the problem.

http://global.focusrite.com/answerbase/contact

I would like to add, that if you plan to use your 2i2 for electric guitar recording, I'd recommend the 2i4 or above due to the way the gain staging works, you'll have more headroom with the 2i4 and above.

Hope that helps

While that is certainly not an indication of an error, it does suggest you might want to do your homework on compatibility with your software and hardware PRIOR to upgrading OS versions.  (just a thought for future decision making).  Some things have definitely been problematic with Windows 8.1, where they have worked just fine in Windows 8.  (other products/vendors).

Re: Intermittent process crashing when saving and closing sonar since x3d 2013/12/25 21:48:00 (permalink)
Hi Robert,

Thanks for the tips - Merry Xmas to you too buddy!

I generally use Sonar without the scarlette and USB devices connected - it's rare unless I want to lay down some guitar or KB tracks.

I would normally use Sonar (sitting by the couch) only with my internal soundcard and built in MIC.  With this project I am simply using midi tracks - I have found that using ASIO4ALL this way works really well! Without ASIO4ALL I get lots and lots of latency issues amongst others that I've mentioned in previous posts some time ago..

I ran the DW tool against sonar executable and I'm not so sure now after reading up on the FAQ's this tool will help with this specific problem, although agree this is a pretty neat tool!

Re: Intermittent process crashing when saving and closing sonar since x3d 2013/12/25 22:45:58 (permalink)
I think sonar isn't handling the On Close Document function too well in my situation - its' only calculating guess - I suppose cakewalk would need to reproduce this while debugger is attached to find the unhandled exception in their code...

The previous analysis showed the running context against the unhandled exception event which could turn out to be invalid, the following will use the context of when the unhandled exception actually occurred

So what apps were you using? Dependency Viewer, blue screen view?

What does Windows event viewer say I wonder?

Yeah I have all those tools,..  Lookup windows debugging tools and download the win debugger, you get so much more from an analysis, here is some starters guide.. - but you do need pbs files from the developers - and need access to the cod to have any real value using it

I wouldn't have thought app event log would have more on this than the mini dump would. In any case here tis

Indeed, you need the symbol files (pbs) or the full source code for it to go anywhere (not something Cake is likely to supply  ). I'm sure you are probably aware the debugging service will take a lot of resources....

Anyway...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MSVCR110.dll
Looks like you may need this:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679

Windows update may want to deliver this package (possibly in the optional area) as well. Best done through that method I suggest if it is available.
Cheers...

Just installed 2012.4 updates (x64 and x86 versions) and checked msvcr110.dll version and still the same version - although it does show now 11.0.61030.0 redist (x64 and x86) is installed from programs and features..

Anyway, see how it goes..

Thanks for the suggestion Alex, I think you've nailed it...

Yep - that's fixed it!  I can't reproduce the problem anymore

Glad you are fixed.

I STILL have no idea why you as a matter of choice run with ASIO4ALL when you have a perfectly good audio interface that has support for Windows 8.  It just does not make any sense - from what you have posted - I must be dense.

I believe if you were to remove ASIO4ALL completely and instead use your Focusrite audio interface, that you would get better results (using the Focusrite ASIO drivers).

I would also point out that while some folks deliberately keep their computers from running Windows Update, I can assure you that the Cakewalk folks are developing their software in a Windows environment that has all routine maintenance applied, and in fact their installation process REQUIRES a certain level of applied maintenance.

I highly recommend you make sure Windows is up to date with maintenance prior to installing ANY Cakewalk updates/upgrades, in addition to my suggesting that you consider using your dedicated audio interface.

ASIO4ALL is essentially masquerading as an ASIO driver, but to do what it does, it sucks the life out of your system.  A purpose-built audio interface, such as your Focusrite, uses dedicated hardware/firmware, and takes most of the load off of your computer's resources.

Hi Rob and Alex,

I really thank both of you for your help! I really appreciate it and am sure others do too! Your both masters at sonar no doubt and do look out for your suggestions and recommendations in other posts you make and know I can trust them too.

It's interesting that I DO have my Windows update settings to automatically update recommended updates and Microsoft updates.  I also did run the check now for updates and it had NOT found any, so I manually applied the 2012.4 redist update - beats me!!! (maybe cakewalk should package this in to their updates) anyway I'll need to investigate further why windows update hadn't found any new updates based on my version of the redist software.

Why I don't use the perfectly suited focusrite sound card?  I'm glad you asked and if your interested read on...

I normally use my notebook as my DAW - HP Envy 17-j005xt, the HP Envy Recline 27" k001a is one the whole family share and I personally haven't used much.  Having said that, I don't use the focusrite external soundcard because I use my laptop and having cables and headphones and the device itself dangling seems to get me into trouble with the others here, and causes my laptop to be less mobile - remember I'm a hobbyist at this and make no $$$ using my DAW - if it were to be the case I would have definitely had a purpose built standalone system for this.

My study is where I would connect all the devices for my laptop DAW - though my study is my place of work and even there I don't usually mess around with my DAW.  However when I do, this is where I come into problems with interchanging the driver mode settings in the DAW from using the internal sound card to the focusrite - I previously reported that when I change driver modes in sonar this would cause sonar to crash. I was also finding lots of crackles and pops and latency issues when focusrite wasn't used - the asio4all seems to have settled all this behaviour and have stuck to it ever since. I haven't had any issues using it in this way!  To be honest haven't bothered to use the focusrite unless I want to lay some guitar tracks down.

So there you have it,  I'll one day get around to re-arrange how I use my study and will spend more time in there using my DAW on my laptop instead of work. At the moment when I am in my study I sub-consciously go into work mode and can sometimes lose myself doing work - sadly my work is none related to music or using my DAW, although I do enjoy my work as well....

Thanks for listening and cheers...
Jim

The dreaded 'family' :)

I figured it was something like that - anyways, glad you are more stable now - those might have been optional updates - I don't recall.

Best of luck with it all - by the way I am by NO means a Sonar 'master', and learn things every day from others in this forum.  I am a keyboard player that also happens to be a computer programmer.  Most of what I do in Sonar is midi-based.  There are GIANT swathes of areas in music production I have NO clue about, and have a great deal of respect for the whole audio mixing side of it all, not to mention the mastering process.

Take care,

Bob Bone

Same here, not a Sonar master, I've mainly had experience in software development, quality control and consoles in old recording studios (most longer exist) as a sound engineer, and maybe I was a Cakewalk master the 1990's although I've forgotten.

In fact I'm going through the manual and tutorials everywhere I go right now to nail this X3 down and I'm still learning something new everyday (and coming up with a few issues along the way). Best of luck....
