I Went Outside...
to shovel snow. It was -34F. Before long I couldn't see a thing so I went back in. Here's why: Not only that but my eyes started tearing up large amounts of water which froze as it tried to drip off my face. If I had fur on my face I would've looked like this:

Isn't he some kind of mythical childhood creature? I heard about him once but I don't really believe he exists. Probably just another bedtime story character like the tooth fairy or sasquatch or little gray aliens or...

Man, does that bring back memories. Sub-zero temps are not uncommon in Denver, but one Winter ('89, maybe '90) we got down to -25 and stayed there for two weeks. The weird thing is that it's deceptively not really that uncomfortable. Yes, the air has a decided bite to it, and your breath condenses on your beard, and in your nose. A scarf is a wonderful thing. And yes, glasses are an experience. We were dressed for it, and as long as you were working and generating heat, it wasn't too bad. But we has to be careful, because the last thing you want to do is start to sweat. You can go hypothermic pretty quick. I hate those wave shivers as your body ejects the deep chill. I gotta stop. I'm getting cold just thinking about it.

I have never been in air that cold. I once worked in freezers that got down to- 20 below. No where near -34. I don't think I would be going outside very much. Brrrrrrr. I was recently reading about Mars where the average temperature is -60 on a good day and people are signing on to be the first colonists in the near future. No trees and carbon dioxide for atmosphere.... no return trip. -34 is sure good enough even in Fahrenheits :o). In warmer countries people start dying much before such temperatures :o) In such cold you need to warm up your body little by little. If you rush out and start shoveling your lung veins may shrink rapidly and your blood preassure rise in a dangerous manner. You should inhale through your nose, it's designed to warm the air little. Cotton fabrics are known as "dead mans cloth", because they totally loose the ability to maintain warmth when they get moist. On the contrary, when they're wet, they very effectively lead the body heat outwards. So, wool or technical (moisture transferring) fabrics agaist the skin are the best. If it's not windy, you can work quite well in such a temperature for surprisingly long, if clad properly. The most difficult part are the gloves. Lamb skin mittens (fur inside) and woollen gloves under them are good. I've never used/had/seen ski'ing gloves or similar made of synthetic materials that are any good in around -25 or colder. I have heard that such exist, though. Glasses can crack if you take them in and put them on some warm surface or such, but I think yours aren't cracked??
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

+1 on the gloves. When ever we go back and visit MN in the winter, my wife always wants to buy a new pair of ski gloves. She's always cold with those. I grew up with Lamb skin mittens that had wool lining, "choppers" we used to call them.

I looked at the pictures, read the post and had to use my inhaler... I didn't go outside but I did get up! Say what you will... it is too cold where you live. Do you live in like Russia or something? Even most of Europe is north, and northern Europe is like arctic. When we visited Germany a few years ago for the Christmas holidays I was surprised, it doesn't look that far north on the globe but Mainz, and Koln are like being in Canada... then Berlin is WAY on up there. In Mainz it got dark at 4:30 in the afternoon and it was frigid, and snowing. My daughter who lives there (Dusseldorf now) said that in Germany it is overcast and cold ALL winter. Even Rome, Italy is on the same latitude as Chicago... but I digress. I am not sure where you live but it is certainly cold. The US "Midwest" the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, etc... have weather extremes. It is absolutely frigid in winter and sometimes in summer it is only hotter in the southwest. Crazy... it is temperate here in north GA, still it is relative. Today it is upper 40s and rainy... miserable weather to me but obviously, it could be worse. I lived in Colorado in the early 70s when I was a hitchhiker and an itinerant amateur pharmacist... I remember one day up in the mountains, we were playing around out on a frozen lake in shirt sleeves. Then other days the blowing snow would turn one side of you white. I like the weather here, it is almost always 5 degrees hotter in southwest GA, where I grew up, more humid there and there are GNATS all around your face from about 9:00 AM until the evening when the mosquitos run them off. Florida is a nice place to visit but the wind and sand get old after a couple of weeks at the beach and inland, well... I've lived there too and there really is no reason to live there. One year at the beach I had goggles, back when the girls just started to wear thongs... I nearly drowned. That wasn't so bad. I like snow for a day or two but up near the lakes where it just stays on the ground all winter, I bet that really gets old, especially when it gets dirty. Yes, I think I will stay here. Perhaps I will look at your pictures now and then. Winter.. ehhh. Maybe I will get up again in a minute. J

I didn't think Jersey was that bad, but then I didn't live along the shore this past year either. Maybe my outlook would be a lot different. I guess the taxes there can be pretty steep. Coming from southern Georgia years ago, I think I have finally learned to adapt to the cold here in the NE US. It took a really long time to get the hang of it after living somewhere that almost never has snow. People get excited there with what we here would look at as a typical winter day. Some things I like about it cold weather- It winter kills off a lot those pests and viruses. Cleans things up a bit, gives the plants animals and trees time to rest on standby until Spring. If I had been born in Norway I suppose I would have coped somehow. I wouldn't have known any different. When I was in -20 freezers it really wasn't that bad. Granted I wouldn't want to sleep in there but if dressed properly It wasn't terribly bad. I knew I had to do it so I guess I psyched myself.

>>Why the hell would ANYONE want to even live in an area that has the potential to even go down to -34?Or even NJ for that matter. Who said I "want" to. Sometimes you're simply born into a situation and are unable to find the right door. There was a time, I suppose, but if there ever was, it's fastly becoming a vanishing distant minisculely obscure thing of the past. So in desperation you think any door will do. What's behind door #1? Going thru the wrong door could be disastrous, like when Frozen Man meets Burning Man for the 1st (& only) time. >>Some things I like about it cold weather- It winter kills off a lot those pests and viruses. ... until Spring. Only to return in Spring with a vengance! -Frozen man

As long as we're on the 'the coldest I've ever been' contest, lol, found myself in Great Falls, Montana one year serving in USAF. Got down to -40 degrees for a couple days. Base operations were shut down; only went to chow hall & back. Did have the proper gear for it tho, full arctic gear which included a nice wolf fur-trimmed parka/pants/ inflatable 'bunny boots'/ gloves, etc. Growing up, we would get the weather report for the northern panhandle of Idaho around Lewiston; minus 60-70 degrees sometimes, yikes! Personally, one Feb I spent in New Jersey beats them all. Wasn't the air temp, but a combo of wind chill & humidity. That cold NE wind off the ocean went right thru this tourists' ski parka & I found out what bone-chilling cold felt like. Must have been the reason our small tourist group was the only living things out on the beach that night. Oh, the specs are bifocals. Best, HeyDan
