X2 Midi Issue
I will try and keep this short- at long last have updated my computer so from a 6 year old xp underspec unit now running w8, with a intel i7 and 12GB ram. My sound card is an emu 0404 usb which to my surprise has loaded and seems to be working fine. My midi control is an emu x board which also loaded and worked well on a test piece I did yesterday afternoon. Shut the programme down came back to it 3 hrs later and nothing form the xboard. X2 recognises it, but no response of any kind. Any thoughts, or am I will chancing my arm with a board 9 years old? Thanks all

I have an xboard and from time to time have issues....heres a few troubleshooting steps.
1. Check in your preferences in Sonar and Midi Devices and make sure the Xboard is highlighted, if so move it to the top of the list and click apply, then restart Sonar. 2. Make sure its being read by windows in device manager (if its being read by Sonar then it should be but it doesnt hurt to check)
3. Sometimes the xboard does VERY things, I find a hard reset on the device solves more tricky issues... this can be done by turning the device on and then pressing the "Home", "Edit", "Patch Select" and "MIDI Channel" buttons simultaneously, the panel will flash and then you get a "good" or "bad" message..... If the latter then further troubleshooting is needed (such as reloading the firmware)
4. Obviously check your MIDI cables.
5. Are you connecting via USB or are you running on batterys? 6. Try loading the latest drivers from the EMU site (that should be #1 really)
Hope these help.

P.S If connected by USB try the device is different USB ports and also make sure that its connected directly to the motherboard and not a USB hub.

Thanks for the quick reply Marky- 1. Checked first time around and again 2. Yes, Windows reading it 3. Nice one, did not about that but done and GOOD message 4 & 5, connected via USB and no midi cables 6. already done however latest one was in 2011 !! Will try different usb ports as suggested, have 6 of them on this tower. Just seems baffling to me it was working on the first and initial set up. Come back to the saved piece some 3 hrs later and nothing since then. Cheers Paul

Sometimes Windows goes a bit bonkers with USB ports and I have had this issue with the Xboard. You could try uninstalling the device from device manager, rebooting the PC and then reinstall on a different USB port. Also, in Windows device manager click on "view" at the top and click "show hidden devices", in there and slightly greyed out *might* be multiple instances of the Xboard under the Sound,Video and Game controllers section, delete any greyed out ones and go for a fresh install.

No worries....
Another thing to try is to forget about the Emu drivers completely and let Windows install under its own drivers as a MIDI/USB device.
Have you tried using a MIDI cable rather than USB as well? Mine is connected via MIDI as the trouble I was getting under MIDI over USB was driving me nuts.

I used to own an X-Board 61 - LOVED that controller. Is it possible that Windows selectively disabled the device? It is the default behavior for Windows to do so, if a device has been idle for some period of time. This will then make the device unavailable to Sonar, until it is disconnected/reconnected or Windows is restarted. To check this, and change the Windows default behavior, there are a couple of ways to get at it. One way is to go to "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings", then click on 'Change advanced power settings'. Once there, scroll down and expand USB Settings, then expand 'USB Selective Suspend Setting', and set to 'Disabled', click Apply and close your way out of it all. Once the above is accomplished, you may still have to disconnect the USB cable for the X-Board and connect it back in again. Then, you can go into Device Manager and you should see the device listed in the Sound video and game controllers, if you expand that. Bob Bone

+1 thats another way in the myriad of problems that happen with the Xboard. I am currently trying to resolve an issue I had before where you plug in the USB cable and the Xboard shuts itself off after 1 second, only batteries will work... (Grumble) I resolved this before by getting a power supply that works, flashing the Firmware then uninstalling the device from windows, checking the power management settings as Rob says and then resetting the device and then it works...Only problem is, in my cable boxes (SNAKES!!) I cant find the fecking power supply. AA batteries it is for now..... I love the Xboard, (old skool EMU guy here) its served me well over the years but when it goes, IT GOES!!!!

Mine ended up becoming unreliable for gigs, and I ended up replacing it with an Axiom-Pro 61, and have loved the ruggedness and functionality of that ever since. I also found the power supply to be invaluable, for the X-Board. Hope it stays functional for you, Bob Bone

You might be able to find some universal power supply option that would power the X-Board, OR find a couple of them on Amazon or EBay. Bob Bone

Hi Guys, No not resolved. Ive reinstated, done all as suggested above and still no response. Listed in device manager, ticked and where it should be on sonar device panel. Next stop will be midi leads I guess, but still baffled as to what changes from when it first worked ( as good it was!) to 3 hrs later on the same programme. Thanks for the help thus far, I am sure it must be something simple that I am missing, but what I know not!
