Music Creator 6 - Extra notes appearing when I add lyrics

Hi All
I'm using Music Creator 6. I'm in staff view, trying to add lyrics under the lines of music that I've already recorded via midi. When I type the lyrics in, extra notes appear in the staff above...no idea why. I've done this kind of thing hundreds of times before and never had this problem. 
I've tried closing down MC and restarting but hasn't helped.
Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong would be greatly appreciated!

    Greg - I'm using spacebar if it's a new word or hyphen if it's a new syllable on the next note.
