Flash Player question...
Lately almost every video on every site on any browser tells me I need to install the latest version of Flash Player. My wife's computer is doing the same thing. In IE11 I get a bar at the bottom of the screen that asks me if I want to install FP, I just close it and the video plays but it has become annoying. I don't know if it is a IE problem, a Windows problem, or a Adobe problem. I suspect it is an Adobe problem because it affects multiple browsers and I have installed updates and updated IE, my wife has not. Is this happening to you and do you know a fix? I think the last FP update was to 11.9.something. I looked but could not find it to get the version. I did notice that last week it installed an "Addin" called airappinstaller. So, is it just me? I can uninstall FP and reinstall but I have done that a couple of times to no effect. Thanks for the help, J

All I know is that you really need to make sure it's legitimate! There's some malware going around that makes it look like you need to upgrade your Flash.
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Yes. Heed the warning that Craig indicated. i did a recent re-install (Win-7) on one of my desktop PC's and did experience the popups regarding Flash Player installation (very annoying). I ignored them and eventually they went away. (Sorry for the non-solution). I am currently using IE-11. But I would suggest also running a MalWare program such as MalWareBytes (maybe this is what stopped them from bothering me). I am also more than willing to upgrade to the latest Adobe Flash Player when I feel secure it is coming from Adobe itself.

You can un-install Adobe Flash Player in Programs and Features in Control Panel just like any other program. Are you sure you got the new one? I remember having trouble downloading it, and right now I do not remember what it took to finally download it, perhaps it was anti-virus interfering but right now I am not sure. I go to the site and it would not download all the way, and I messed around for awhile before it finally did. Just can't remember right now what I did right now.

In W8, I'm not. But there are a few sites that have some spam, and they are littering your page with crap, and they say that you need to update the Flash Player, and if you click on it, it will take you to a page that my F-Secure immediately locks and says is not safe, and it is in Mexico! Need to know more? You can update the Flash Player directly from their website, and do not need any other place to tell you, btw! I use a web site to watch soccer games from Europe and that place has 25 updates for the Flash Player and they have numbers from 11 to 74999999, if you know what I mean!

Thanks Spacealf and Moshkaie. I did a full scan with Malwarebytes and it found three things. Interestingly one was called a Rogue.Multiple, it was GM_2011_Xmas_Freebie that Cake offered a while back. I suspect it just thought that it was malware but to be safe I deleted it anyway. The other two were CONDUIT related. I had managed to disable all the Conduit stuff, I had tried to delete it all kinds of ways and it would delete and come right back, I could stop it and it would just start itself again. I had managed to disable it using Administrative Settings and the registry but a couple of things were still there. I don't remember where I picked up Search Conduit, maybe while trying Chrome but I do know it is one of the most tenacious programs I have ever encountered. Hopefully it is GONE now. I deleted all three just to be sure. I may reinstall the GM_2011_Xmas_Freebie. IIRC, though I have not used it... maybe I should just leave it be. Have any of you encountered MWB telling you that a midi file pack or such is malware? Going to delete Flash and Shockwave players now. You know I think I only recently got shockwave player.. maybe that is part of the problem, but why should it be? So.. of to delete and reinstall. OH, I installed the current/newest version more than once, delete and install using the Adobe site. Trying again. Norton always tells me the file is safe, so maybe it is something just trying to get me to install malware because whenever I am prompted to install FP, I just close the IE box and everything plays. I hope this works. Maybe my mouse wandered too far out into the under web brush. Thanks to all... J

In Control Panel/programs etc... I have several Adobe products. The first one is Adobe Air, I am not sure where I got that or if there is a program that is dependent on it. So I have installed: Adobe Air Adobe Flash Player 11 Active X Adobe Reader X (10.1.8) Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5 Adobe Shockwave Player 12 I will uninstall SWP 11.5 for sure I don't know what to do with Adobe Air, I am thinking that it came with something that I will need it for, maybe X3. Maybe it came with XLN because I know I have not had it for very long. Thanks, Julien

Adobe Air I think is an add-on for Adobe Reader (*.pdf files reader) that you use when reading *.pdf files like manuals from websites whatever. Shockwave Player is up to version 12 so I think 11 whatever you had is before. Another one that plays I think *.swf files or something that is needed if you ever use it. Other uses to. Adobe Flash Player the new one is what Adobe installs and what websites use to play videos like utube, or numerous others websites that use it. Adobe Reader of course is for *.pdf files, unless you want to make those, then you would have to buy the full version. Nothing wrong with Adobe and you will not pick up anything there that is malware. Afterall, it is like Java and may need updates just like anything on a computer that uses other programs to play whatever on websites. Usually you can tell Adobe Flash Player, to tell you if it needs an update and you decide when to do it, or install it automatically, or do not install any updates when you install the newest version. Java the same way, when it is installing, otherwise all the update programs are running when you install the program, in Windows, the programs all following Microsoft that started off this crap by installing little start-up programs say for like Microsoft Office (so it starts up faster than it would otherwise) to make it seem the OS is faster (when in reality it is not actually faster). If you get up Control Panel - Adminstrative Tools - System Configuration then you can go through all that stuff that may start up and have it start up or not. But then updates will have to be done manually if any security concerns is why they updated their software anyway. Sort of like Windows Update but since different companies and their software used, then they usually have their update programming running to inform you that there is an update and that since it concerns security of your computer that you should download it and install the upgrade. That's all because it such a Wonderful World, but all those little programs take a little bit of memory and if you have enough memory then probably no big problem, although if you are concerned and want your computer sort of clean of running all those little programs then you can do it manually by not having those startup in the System Configuration mentioned. With DAW perhaps it is better to have as little of programs running automatically like even Windows programs like Defrag with its scheduling - turn it off - Windows Updates with it automatic updates - turn it off, but the second Tuesday of the month is when Microsoft comes out with Upates but sometimes at other times when needed for the OS and all of that stuff going on in the background in your computer. For normal general computing people probably like all that stuff done for them, but if using a computer for a specific purpose and want all the horsepower for that purpose, then you turn all the automatic stuff off and do it manually when you want to do it. Control Panel is your friend as long as you go all through it, and see what is going on in your computer. All those companies think you need the latest update even if you do not need the latest video card drivers or stuff like that. Sometimes video card drivers updates are not needed, not even if Microsoft Update tells you, and then well in the end I decide and not let the OS decide anything for me personally. What you do is up to you with the computer. Convenience sometimes is not needed on the computer but certain programs like Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave Player should be updated or even Java because usually they found a sercurity concern where a hacker could use a fault in the program and take over your computer. However, Norton is not rated that good with some things because it may interfere when it should not being an anti-virus program along with McAfee whatever his name is. There are other ones you may want to consider, and usually the free version works well enough to stop things coming into your computer if something is trying to take it over (a hacker) and sometimes other programs will not work with the anti-virus. AVG is such an anti-virus program that will not work with Steam Client (used for games on the computer) but like anything if I want Steam to run I start it up and not have it start automatically (like the other programs) since they all take memory and I am not using a lot of them all the time anyway. It is like the Microsoft start-up program for Office, I do not need it to start up faster because it is only going to take a few seconds more when starting up the program anayway, so I do not want the star-up program running when booting up the computer and I want it a little cleaner with memory for my own purposes so I do things manually with any of those or they just remind me that an update is available to download whenever.

Thanks Alf... I will reinstall Shockwave Player 12. I set FP to auto update, I can change it along with all the other things I change when I run X3. I have had very little trouble with Norton 360. I use it because it comes free with Comcast. When I was on Adelphia they offered McAfee and it was really bad, maybe that is why I like Norton. Norton has a sleep mode that will suspend any update or checking for them. With McAfee, I could completely turn it off but I cannot turn Norton off so I just turn off the Virus, and Firewall and put it in sleep mode, it seems to do the trick. Disabling WIFI was the biggest thing I didn't know, it makes a WORLD of difference. Maybe I will try MS Essentials. iIve had trouble with AVG, but I don't remember what. I think I got stuff that I didn't want and was hard to remove. I hear nothing but good about MS Essentials. Hopefully I will get a Studiocat this year and I will keep it OFF the internet unless I have to DL or update something an even then, if I can, I will DL/UL using this "make do" computer to do anything I can and then transfer updates with a CD-R or thumb drive. I'll use Jim's advice on all this once I get it. I REALLY appreciate the help, you don't know how much! I still get the prompts to install FP on some sites but I just X out and all is well except for the aggravation. Some things are worth the trouble... Thanks again! If I can ever do anything for you guys let me know, I don't know a lot but will always be willing to check any guitar, amp, or other equipment in within a couple hundred miles of Atlanta. I also make fairly regular visits to SOWEGA and can easily hit Talahassee and Birmingham... and will be honored to do it for you or anyone else. I really don't mind, I like road trips! Julien

jbow Thanks Spacealf and Moshkaie. I did a full scan with Malwarebytes and it found three things. ...
The best way to deal with it, is clean it all up, format, and then reinstall Windows 8 (do it on the 64-bit, btw!!!! the 32 is crap!). When done, you immediately setup your AVB/F-Secure/Norton whichever protector you use. It's important that it be done at this stage, as it will pick up a "clean" registry, and be able to better protect it. After that, you can go about your thing. But I have yet to see one of these bust up F-Secure, in 5 years, but I have always been on the "professional" versions of Windows, and the one time I didn't, that setup was horrendous and off-kilter! And it got promptly smashed by one of those websites.

Well, I have W7, no W8. There are no problems that warrant a clean install, at least I hope not... everything is working well. Those invitations to install Flash Player over and over must be invitations to install malware because I ignore them, close them, and everything works fine. I hope there isn't something going on that I don't know about. XP wasn't as secure but was easier to cleanup, I think. I'm going to leave it alone as long as it is just making me ignore messages telling me I need something I already have unless that is really something wrong and I don't know it. I am rather dense some.. most of the time, so if I am missing the point tell me.

I recommend having a separate machine for the DAW that records things, so you can put Windows, Firewall, DAW, and you are done. There is nothing to interfere with the recording and then your playback, which in my situation goes to another computer. I asked F-Secure about this and they said that I could turn the F-Secure off and it would be fine, and I asked how to handle the Windows message that your computer is not safe, and you can turn that off as well. All in all, the best thing to do is to not even have it connected to the internet, but since you have to "network", instead of stand alone, the internet connection is already there, but I have it setup so I can just unplug it from the router and conversation is over.
