Gone Fishin' - Now Mastered - Opinions Please

I won't say it's better, it's notably louder and I added some more verb.  I definitely learned something in the process.  This was the first time I used automation in the mix for example, and it was the first time I tried to mix with mastering in mind.  Thanks for the feedback.

Here's the mastered song:

I remember this one and yes, it sounds much better. Very nicely done and a nice mix. The vox is right where it should be and sounds nice and clear. Bravo!!

I don't think or recall having heard this one before. Mix sounds good on this one.  Perhaps a touch more reverb on the vox would be the only thing I would change..... maybe on the master too. Just a touch.

the master sounds okay to me...I only have a few things I wanted to say if I may:

the most time when I listen to a track,  I imagine I am in the rehearsal room with the band, and when I would say to them about the music. in this case I wud say:

"hey pianoplayer, please back off a bit, you don't need to play all of the time. why don't you play less on the verse, come back in the chorus?"

Thank you speedtom.  Yes.  I fought that piano player the whole time...lesson learned.
I also did not use separate tracks for the AD, and that was a mistake as well, because I couldn't figure out how to easily contain that symbol ring and those snare hits.  I think I understand the basics of compression now though.

    Here's the mastering chain.

On the imported stereo wav track:

Quad EQ HP Filter -> PC76 Comp -> A-Type Console Emulator -> BT Stereo Imager -> LP-64 EQ -> BT Comp -> Sonitus Reverb

On the Master Bus -> T-RackS Clipper -> T-RackS Limiter

    Dear Scott,

I listened again. The master sounds fine to me, I maybe would make the kick drum a bit louder, but I believe your sound is more suitable for the country genre (I as a rock/punkrock fan like the lick loud!) I had another production "trick" that you might want to use if you feel to re-mix the song: at the end, at the question/response-part (you got the beer? - YEP!) you could use different eqs and panning for the question-response.

beside that I must say that you are making huge steps when I keep your first song in mind. keep the good work up!

Love the concept and the lyric. Can't really "judge" the mastering as I'm on a laptop. But, it all sounds pretty clean and clear.

Totally not my kind of music at all, so I may not be an appropriate critic, but it sounds well done in terms of mixing and playing and all that.  Vocals fit the genre, to me.  The lyrics though..I guess I would have liked to hear them roll off a little more poetically than so straight forward, but maybe that's a genre thing?

Scott, you hit this one out of the park.  The lyrics are clever and well arranged.  I like the honky-tonk feel of the piano, and sometimes it's OK to put it up front like you did.  Although it's a uniform volume throughout the song, it still breathes and would stand up to most commercial recordings.  Well done.

    All the best,

This is actually quite good agree regards the piano player.

Very nice mix, I have yet to find any of my songs where I like the A-type console emulator, you have used it just right I think.
I first had a listen on a cheap and nasty set of headphones, and the song is came across very light in the low end, there was hardly any bass or kick to be heard. This might be a good thing though, as any heaviness in the bottom end would make the speakers distort. I guess what I'm really saying, now that I think of it, is that the song is going to work well on systems that aren't up to scratch. Will work well over the radio I think.

Timidi, Voda, Lynn, Wookiee, Band19, Rebel, Speedtom, Guitarplayer, Guitarhacker and anyone I may have missed, thank you, thank you, thank you!!  I need to work on song dymanics, among other things, and I am experimenting with that by making adjustments to different versions of the mix.

Another thing I'm struggling with is the difference in sound between my budget monitors, laptop speakers, earbuds, the stereo in the truck, etc.  I probably need to depend more on reference songs, which I used 'sort of' on this project.

Thanks again for listening and taking the time to comment.

    Hi Scott,

It's a little hard to compare the pre-mastered mix to the mastered one, because Soundclick generally compress the heck out of everything. Might be good to put both WAV files up on Soundcloud, I think the quality is better there.

Either version is a goodtime, fun song with a cracking hook (pun intended) though
