Live Show Mixing and Simultaneous Recording to SONAR

I have been looking at various options to achieve the above. However, there is undoubtedly more options than I could go through in my lifetime, so I thought it might be useful if we shared info on how various consoles, especially digital, can route signals for simultaneous recording while mixing. At this point, I'm not so concerned about price, as I am interested in having this knowledge available in one place.

The Presonus Live consoles appear to link pre-fader to the firewire card. Not sure if there are other options. Anyone know?

The Soundcraft Vi1 (and most likely other Vi series) appears to allow you to do almost anything, this is using the optional MADI card. Of course, you would have to have the corresponding hardware in your PC or laptop. I at first thought you couldn't bypass the mixer processing stages until I discovered what they call "tie lines" which will allow you to bypass all processing and go straight to the MADI card.

The Roland stuff is a complete mystery to me. The block diagram suggests there is a way to tie the REAC inputs and outputs together bypassing the internal processing, but I couldn't find it anywhere in the user manual. Anyone actually know?

The Tascam DM stuff, using the firewire card, appears to allow you to route however you wish.

I started to look at some of the Digico stuff and I believe they are pretty flexible too, but I was interrupted and didn't go back.

This is what I believe to have figured out over the last few days. What have you encountered in your efforts? If I've missed something in the above, or gotten something wrong, please add to and/or correct the record.

Thanks,

Bruce

I use an Alesis D24 XR for live tracking and import the wav files into Sonar with HD24 tools. It integrates well with any decent analog board and any digital board that has adat. So many things can go wrong tracking live and this for me takes many variables out of the equation.

Yes, but I wanted to be specific to SONAR and also avoid some of the undesirable characters there.

There's not much reason to think about SONAR specifically, mainly because it is a program that is designed to work with a wide variety of hardware.

If, for example, you asked about pro Tools then the answer might be: "Use a Venue board".

If, for example, you asked about Studio One then the answer might be: "Use a Presonus board".

However, because you are asking about SONAR you can decide to do this dozens of ways. If it were me I would want a split that was pre efx and pre fader, and maybe even pre trim (in other words a split before the board). I would not associate the live mix with the multi track capture at all. Why? because there are probably several instruments that aren't making it into the live mix because the stage sound is already loud enough, but you will need a good level of everything for the multi track for playback when the stage sound is not a factor.

That's about it. You can use any number of splitting strategies and none of them are specific to SONAR.

You may even find that some other software is lighter and quicker to set up a multi track recording session with and use that to track and then import all the tracks into SONAR later for mixing.

    Stuff like that.
