Loud POP Then Progressively Louder Static and Crash - [Resolved]
OK, I have a new project that I have barely worked on which seems to have a major problem already: I can no longer work on the project for more than a minute or two before I hear a loud static-pop through my speakers and then major digital noise starts feeding through my speakers at which point I have to quickly exit Sonar. It is kind of like major digital clipping that seems to happen for no reason. When this happens I have noticed that the VU meter for Session Drummer spikes to 99 db and shows completely red which does not clear until I close the program. I have seen this before in Sonar X2, but it was rare and I'm not sure if it is related to Session Drummer or not. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know what could be the problem? I think I may have to scrap this project, start another and hope this doesn't keep happening.

I've never experienced anything like that, but my first thought was something about routing/possible feedback loop.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

without going too deep, as I used to have this problem(post back for specifics)... Something in your audio driver doesn't play well with sonar at all times. you won't like this but it's corrupted. completely remove the offending driver(including in the registry). then restart sonar so you get the no driver/asio message. then reinstall your audio driver. worked for me, hope this helps mel

Ahh, I think there are a couple of things for me to try: I was playing with stretching audio in this project and I will try reinstalling my drivers.

I had probelms like this when I used a motu ultralite and could never find out what the problem was then I switched to an RME Fireface 400 and all the problems went away.

I am wondering if it does have something to do with my MOTU, but I will try reinstalling the drivers, hopefully it isn't related to the stretching of clips, because that is handy.

If your MOTU is a Hybrid, hook it up via USB and see if it happens.

Did you "Bounce To Clips" after stretching? I've had similar popping issues after an edit or adjusting Audio Snap and and bouncing the track helped. Good luck! MG

I get this very rarely.. not sure what I am doing when it happens but I am usually moving fast when it does... I have an UAD and Apollo audio interface(s). I can still save before quickly exiting and am using X3C... I am sure this started happening a few versions earlier. The only worry I have is that if I was monitoring when it happens, my monitors will blow. Jim

Ok, something is majorly wrong with Sonar now - I started a new project with only MicroTonic and Diva running and out of nowhere I got an nddll.dll error and Sonar crashed. Now Sonar crashes upon starting every time, even with projects that were completely stable just days ago. I am going to reinstall my MOTU drivers and if that doesn't work, Sonar. This is frustrating!

Ok, I wasn't able to uninstall the MOTU driver, however I was able to reinstall an older version of the driver from August and now I am able to load previously stable projects. The new project I started tonight, which has Microtonic and Diva in MIDI tracks only crashes Sonar upon start-up! I guess one of them needs to be reinstalled. I'll try that next.

Ok, Diva seems to have been the culprit - it had a BETA notice which I see from the website was a bug. I have installed the newest version and it seems to be working, my new project hasn't crashed since, but its only been about 5 minutes.

I don't know if the problem with DIVA is related to the pop problem I was having before, but it could have been the MOTU driver or the time stretching I was doing. I hope I don't see this problem again.

Hello, i am using sonar platinum and often get these loud pops . It happens to me when i am looping. If i am listiening to a repeating sequence, particularily with a heavier project, i get a loud pop as the loop ends. I too am wortied about blowing a speaker. I am using a motu 16a. Any ideas? Thanks

Not sure how to prevent it but to protect yourself and your system, insert a limiter on whatever bus your loops preview through.

Hello and thanks, I doubt that will help, but I will surely try. I notice that this problem is most prevalent with a heavier project. One that has 50+ tracks etc... and when some of these have many take lanes....not sure if that is the catalyst or not. In either case, this is surely a worrisome problem that should have been addressed by Cakewalk earlier on.

Might have been better to start a new thread. You added on to an old one that has "Resolved" in the title, which will likely discourage viewers from reading. Please create a signature and list your system specs (See mine for example); it'll make troubleshooting easier for us. Also, I recommend the free Ice9 Automute plugin for stopping overs. Like Jonesey said, you put it at the end of whatever bus you're using. http://www.cerberusaudio.com/Software/Products/Ice9/

As JonD says, you stand a much better chance of getting answers if you start your own thread rather than adding to one already marked "resolved". Having said that, make sure Sonar's snap preferences are set to only snap to sample "zero crossings." If you zoom right in on an audio track's waveform you'll see it frequently crosses the central zero line. Those are places where the sample has zero volume. If you cut or loop a sample at any other point than those you're very likely to get popping because the audio will be suddenly jumping from one volume to another which can cause quite severe popping when it occurs. You'll see what I mean if you zoom an audio region to the point you can clearly see the waveform as a line, not as "blobs". There are other things that can cause popping, including ASIO driver settings, such as latency set too low for the system to handle as the growing project makes more and more demands on it, but leaping from one point on a sample to another spot with many decibels of volume difference between them can make some very loud pops indeed.

Hello JonD thanks! Just thought I would share this, after MUCH MUCH pain and countless hours of total frustration! I have found my problem and would like to share this; hoping that others could a: simulate the problem b: avoid it if it does happen. Believe it or not it was a plugin! The plugin is Soneq. I am saddeed by this, as I LOVE the way it sounds. Does wonders for BD. I tested thoroughly and under various scenarios so as to duplicate the loud POPS and eliminate other factors. I would experience a SUPER LOUD POP when I had a loop running. At the end of the loop, regardless of loop duration, I would get a loud pop when the sequence ends and then as it resumes, it would take moments for the audio engine to reinitialize. I made sure that I installed the plugin in the correct 32bit directory. I was careful to rule out material-being-played; as I was able to simulate the pop on various busses that had different program material. I wrote to the company with provided details as to how I was experiencing the POP. I am ever thankful to JonD and Bristol for guiding me to the ICE9, thank you! Its a lifesaver! I will keep this panel up to date on whatever comms I receive from the plugin company...

Hello All, I should mention that although the plugin insert caused the pops and removal of plugin stopped them....it may not be the plugin but rather a process by which this particular plugin was susceptible to the pops. I have also asked MOTU to check into this as I also am experiencing some other freezes where the speaker output is like digital distortion (loud) and Sonar freezes, the only way to stop this is to reboot the audio interface.
