Defragging internal drives on Window 7 Pro ?
When I bought my computer, the techs had disabled the Windows Defragment option from working because my system (C) drive is an SSD drive (okay, not supposed to be defragged, ever) . . . but the other internal (E) Sata drive that I use for sample libraries, and Sonar projects etc . .. can never be defragged either ?
My questions are:
Do non-system drives not need to be defragmented ?
Can you turn on defragment for just non-system drives ?
Anyone with knowledge of this would really satisfy my curiosity, even though I have no current drive performance issues, but would like to know for future reference.

Of course you can set the defragment schedule independently for each drive under windows 7.
Type "disk defragmenter" in the start menu search box to bring up the option to open disk defragmenter.
Click on the disk you want to select and then you can defragment immediately. Or to include a particular drive on a schedule click on "configure schedule", and inside the box for "select disks", and check the check box (your should be blank for C:) for that drive. The checked drives will be defragmented on schedule, the un-checked drives will not.

slartbartfast - I can't run the disk defragmenter program at all (absolutely nothing happens when clicking on it)
I guess they must have totally disabled it.
Not sure how to make it active again.

OK So they probably set the disk defragmenter service to not start up at all.
Type "services" in the start menu search box to bring up the "Services" option. Right click that Click that and in the dropdown menu that opens click "run as administrator" to open the services window. Scroll down through the lengthy alphabetical list of services until you get to Disk Defragmenter. Double click on that to open the properties box. In the startup type box you will probably see disabled. Click the arrow beside that to bring up other options for startup and choose "manual." Then apply. Then OK to close the box and you should now have the default behavior for the Disk Defragmenter service.

Type msconfig in the search area of the start menu - [or use CCleaner's Tool area to find it, if you have].
You might see it unchecked there.
For the record, I know we're not to Defrag an SSD, but I took a chance and did it just once recently now that I have everything installed that I plan to have, [including after some uninstalls & reinstalls], and see no issues from doing it - not that I can tell anyway.
However, I don't plan to do it again.

Thanks for the help guys, I did find disk defragmenter was switched off when I opened "msconfig"
So now I know where to turn it on when I want to defragment my non-system drive.

That's a bit dumb of the techs to do.
Win 7 and 8 automatically detect SSDs, and the defrag tool is automatically set to trim them instead of defragging.

Defraging ssd doesn't hurt it except for using up read/writes. It is just a waste of time. SSD isn't read or written by a moving arm so defraging doesn't help at all. John

Thanks for the info John. There was a warning before starting that doing so can degrade SSDs. Good to know now not to bother - seems like no point anyway.
