2 Installed Copies of Dimension Pro... Help?

So I'm getting ready to clone my main harddrive over to an SSD and I have to go through and cut as many corners as possible to get my 900gb down to under the 256gb the ssd is gonna be. I'm down to 230 so I'm basically good but I want to try to get it under 200 just to be safe.

I found a thread online that explained that it's OK to move the dimension multisamples folder (which is something like 13gb I believe) to a different harddrive and then in the registry how to find where to change a registry value telling dimension where to look for the multisamples. So I did that, loaded up Sonar, loaded an instance of Dimension. Everything works. Yay.

BUT... Then I'm trying to find more space to save... Now keep in mind the Dimension Pro was in \Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro.... Well I just found in \Program Files\Cakewalk a whole 2nd Dimension Pro folder... with a the entire Multisamples folder in there too.

So now I'm not sure what to do... Should I just remove this one since I have the other? But if so, what if I have projects using THIS version of Dimension Pro... if I remove it, they won't find Dimension Pro and then they won't load... Right? Also I didn't find 2 dimension pro's in the registry so I can't really move the multisamples on THIS one and expect to be able to edit the registry for THIS one too...

Pretty confused as to what my best action would be here... Any ideas?

Also, here is MY idea... But I'm nervous about doing it... Leave the "Dimension Pro64.dll" in this 2nd Dimension folder and just erase its multisamples and hopefully from that same registry entry it will look for the same multisamples path as the other one... Anyone think that will work?

Oy...

It does not matter how many versions of DimPro are installed, they should all work with the same multisamples directory. There are two possible registry locations on Vista through Win8 for v1.5 DimPro:
for the 32bit version
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Cakewalk Music Software\dp "Multisamples Folder"
and
for the 64bit version
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\dp "Multisamples Folder"

The VST "Dimension Pro x64.dll" default install path is "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Dimension Pro".
The VST "Dimension Pro.dll" default install path is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Dimension Pro".
Depending on the age of the installation, there may also be older DX format versions of the the plug-in too.

A little more information about the installation would help.

Right on. I'm gonna just try it then. I suppose worst case scenario some old projects that use Dimension will have issues, but I bet it sounds like it will be fine.

On a side note, every description of how to do this I found, none of them mentioned the \Wow6432Node\ part and yet by some random dumb luck, that's where I found it before seeing your message haha. Random.

Thanks for the help

You should be OK with old projects. The only problem I am aware of with old projects are references to the DX format version of DimPro. If you still have the old DX plug-in still installed, the projects will work but if only the VST version is installed, the projects will not see DimPro at all.

Yea actually I think that's what my problem was when i switched to this computer (years ago) all my older projects used the dx version. Ugh. That was a pain haha.

So now I'm not sure what to do... Should I just remove this one since I have the other? But if so, what if I have projects using THIS version of Dimension Pro...

To test this try creating a dummy folder within one of the sets of multisamples.  Launch DimPro, click on Program selector and press F5.  If the new folder is part of the displayed list, then this will indicate that DimPro is using that particular copy of the multisamples.

SonarPlatinum(22.11.0.111)|Mixbus32C(4.3.19)|DigitalPerformer(9.5.1)|Reaper(5.77)
FractalDesign:DefineR5|i7-6850k@4.1GHz|16GB@2666MHz-DDR4|MSI:GamingProCarbonX99a|Matrox:M9148(x2)|UAD2solo(6.5.2)|W7Ult-x64-SP1

Re: 2 Installed Copies of Dimension Pro... Help? 2014/01/22 11:56:32 (permalink)
SO...

It's been a couple days since transferring my system drive over to the SSD and everything's working great... EXCEPT Dimension Pro of course haha. Whatever sound I try to load it says "Can't find Multisample whatevername.sfz"

I just checked the registry and it's certainly set to the right folder... I also just went into Dimension Pro and hit F5 to refresh my patches and it took a while, all the names are still there but still I can't load any.

So, any idea where I could have gone wrong? I suppose worst case since I'm about to install Sonar X3 in the next few days I'll just re-install Dimension Pro while I'm at it... That's going to kill any old projects that use Dimension Pro though most likely because I'm sure the instances won't be loadable (that's been my case in the past and I can totally imagine it happening again)...

There are only 2 ways to get that error message. The registry is not correct or the sfz file is missing. Once you have verified the sfz really exists in the mulitsample tree where you would expect to find it, scan the registry for Multisamples (using the find function) and verify all the DimPro multisample entries are updated correctly.

Re: 2 Installed Copies of Dimension Pro... Help? 2014/01/22 12:35:07 (permalink)
wait wait... i just had an idea... i can't test it now cause i have to leave for work... but i put the exact folder: D:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro\Multisamples in the registry value... maybe I just need D:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro ??

also btw doing the search... theres literally like a million entries with the word multisamples (from all the VSTSs I own) and a million entries with the word dimension (from all kinds of random crap). this is gonna take forever haha...

I am glad you thought of that, the "Multisamples Folder" entry should point to the directory above the Mutlisamples folder. IOW in your example the "Multisamples Folder" should be "D:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro" NOT "D:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro\Multisamples"

Good news. It is a pretty simple layout.

For future reference, in most cases relocating files for most synths does not need a registry entry, it may be accomplished with the DOS mklink command using the /d or /j switch. In the above case, after creating the "d:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro\Multisamples" directory, the DOS command

mklink /j "c:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Multisamples" "d:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro\Multisamples"

would create a junction in the "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro" directory called Multisamples. The junction would point to the "d:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro\Multisamples". Any time an installer wrote to the "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Multisamples" it would actually be updating "d:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro\Multisamples". Any time DimPro read sfz or samples from "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Multisamples", it would actually be reading them from "d:\Samples&Synths\Dimension Pro\Multisamples".
