Waiting for Change

a cool change that is:
today is the fifth consecutive day over 40c with minimum overnight temps of 25c.
it`s now 10am and 38c with a strong northerly straight off the desert, but there is a cool, dry change due early evening which will be a welcome relief as our house is mainly stone and it soaks up the heat:the internal walls are hot to the touch.
unfortunately the change will be a strong southwesterly and there are a number of grass fires south of us so I have packed the hard drives, gibson and fenders and the dogs and are ready to make a run for it-the house is surrounded by around 120sq meters of hardwood decking(freshly oiled mind you) and would light up like a cracker.
it`s a sobering thought that everything physical you own and collected could be all gone tomorrow.
the upside is we are fully insured and it would be interesting to rebuild now and not repeat the mistakes I made as an owner builder the first time.
anyway I am off to let the chooks out to fend for themselves and hope the foxes are too hot to bother.
cheers

I remember living in Australia; those long hot days and nights on the eastern side of downunder can also get very humid.... just sitting in the shade or at night can raise a sweat.

They have good insulation and whirlybirds units that extract heat from the ceiling/roof cavity. A few clean damp hand towels placed in a plastic bag in the freezer for while is great for wiping off sweat.

I enjoyed swimming at beaches far north of Sydney near Taree, NSW, I go during the earliest part of the day before the heat really sets in.

    Take care!

    thanks Songcraft.
I did omit that the 15kva Perkins diesel generator is purring away and the aircon is set at 25c.
the tomatoes are a lost cause though although the hardier herbs seem to be coping

why change if it`s working, fiddling around will only make it worse........
PS:"Climate Change" is a myth-it`s just a co-incidence that this is the worst heatwave on record and we know what can be done with statistics.
PSS:a special hello to members in Europe and the USA-this thread may seem incongruous as you sit there freezing your balls off......................nothing to do with climatechange though..............

87% of all statistics are worthless.

Stay safe Tony. Hard to imagine heat like that, for so long. The only place I've experienced anywhere near that was in Budapest, with about 95% humidity, but it didn't last long.

I've been waiting TO change... change is elusive at best. Actually I am not sure there is such a thing as change. I've heard that "The more things change, the more they stay the same".. and Solomon said, "there is nothing new under the sun", and that was a few days months years decades eons ago. Good luck and I hope you don't have to wait too long.

thanks for your thoughts james and julien.
crisis averted, for now, but I wonder just what the odds are of your home burning to the ground.
I reckon it would be less than the current low level anxieties these crises cause.
but then bushfires are a bit like insurance-gambling that something out of the ordinary will happen when for most of us,happily, fark all bad happens, really,in this crazy world.

Holy crap, that's too durn hot. I actually prefer too-cold to too-hot; at least you can do something about it.

I'm headed for the tropics in a couple of weeks, and was hoping global warming would cut me a break. This'll be my first trip to my little island since we had the electrical service upgraded so as to provide enough power for a/c. But there's still no a/c in the car nor anywhere else on the island, and I can only stay submerged in the ocean for so long.

Why can't the other 200 countries of the world change to the fahrenheit scale?

I guess the U.S. could change to celcius but it makes more sense the other way around.   :)

    *Meh!*

Why can't everyone just use Kelvin and be done with it???

Personally, I don't think there's enough granularity in the Celcius scale.

hi Bit-it`s all relative-our heat comes straight off the desert and it is a dry heat with little humidity.
I will take 44c with no humidity over 34c with 90% humidity, any day.
I worked on the Thai-Cambodian border in 93 with no power and the humidity nearly killed me-literally gasping for air that tasted like thin soup, until I acclimatised.
imagine the Phillipines will be just as bad so remember to keep a wet handkerchief (do-rag for you yanks)tied around your neck to keep those carotid arteries and your brain cool and stay close to a fan.
what will the forums do while you are away or do you have adsl/wireless there?
    cheers

I'll have dial-up over a cellular modem, and then only from the second-floor veranda, and sometimes only at night. I'll probably manage a post or two, but part of this annual therapy is breaking routine and spending some quality time staring off into the sunset, just thinkin'.

Jan: I hear it's really dry down there, driest in 100 years. Doesn't qualify as "tropical", even on a warm day. But jeez, I sure wish I was heading to Anaheim this year. That was an annual pilgrimage for several years. Plus it was especially cool to hang out with you and bapu and julibee and all the rest. Hopefully 2014 will be the year I get back on my financial feet and can start doing fun things again.

It was great to hang with you too.  I couldn't get passes this year.  It's just as well--I have some medical stuff to take care of and probably wouldn't have able to go anyway.  I haven't heard of anyone else going either.

Yes, it's drought conditions down here.  But it's been very warm, too.  It started off with the Santa Ana winds and the big fire in Glendora.  The winds are calming down now, but it's still going to get into the 80's for several days this week.
