A proud Papa...

My 10 year old grand daughter is receiving the Youth Citizenship medal today from the Daughters of the American Revolution.  They award one medal per grade per school. The recipient is chosen by the teachers. I am SO proud of her, and who she is. They also have an award for seniors that also gives a scholarship. She is in the 5th grade in a rather large school. Her dad left when she was a baby and she lived most of the early years of her life with us, her mom too. We are very close. She is a very special person. I don't know how to describe how this makes me feel and don't remember the last time I felt this way. I think I feel more humbled than proud because she was chosen, not in  some competition but just because of who she is and how she lives her life. She reads constantly too, I bought her 8 or 10 books between Christmas and new years because she couldn't get in the school library.

The DAR Youth Citizenship Medal (formerly Good Citizenship Medal) was established to foster among schoolchildren a greater appreciation of the qualities of citizenship Americans must possess if our country is to remain sovereign and independent.
This medal is presented to a student who exemplifies the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism.

• The program is open to individuals in grades 5-11.
• There may only be one medal awarded per grade per school.
• The medal may also be awarded to youth service and patriotic organizations.

Congratulations, Julien and mini-Julienna!  That's a very proud moment.  Very cool.

... the only time I got recognized in school was when the teacher gave me the dubious honor of "Staying after school" or writing 500 times "I will not ____ in the ____." (or something like that).
