Congratulations, Cakewalk

Okay, I just posted what might be construed as a complaint on this forum this morning, but...

Congratulations to the developers of Sonar! Audio Fanzine has dubbed Sonar X3 Best Product of 2014 and considering January hasn't even been left behind yet, that's a pretty confident statement, I'd say.

An interesting bit of trivia that comes from their announcement (found here: Audiofanzine) derives from the way they wrote the sub-heading for their coverage of Melodyne (Melody-ne):

Does this mean it's pronounced mel-o-deen-nee? I've been thinking of it as mel-o-dyn (last syllable rhyming with dine as in: to eat)

Anyway, how do I get the cakewalk newsletter back, as I seem to be missing lots of yummy offers they contain.

Reviewers are familiar with various pieces of software, so they realize that all DAWs have limitations. As a result they are more likely to review based on what a program does do compared to what it doesn't do. By those standards, X3 is pretty awesome.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

I hope I didn't give the wrong impression with what I wrote above. I do think X3 is pretty amazing.

The complaint had nothing really do to with Sonar. It was more to do with bits of old knowledge leaking out of my brain. I hate when that happens.

:-(
If reviews and reviewers provided any practical value reviewers would be able to make a living preparing reviews.

So you gonna give X3 a shot McQ? Seriously it's pretty slick. Seems to have solved the more annoying issues I was personally having granted my needs and usage are very different than yours.

You may... perhaps... like others who were not so keen on the X phenomena... actually like it.

Not being sarcastic. Would genuinely be interested in the McQ Review... that is if it were honest and approached with a relatively open mind.

In the cons, iTiDav mentions a shortcoming as "sheet-music management, still very basic after many years". But really, how many of us use the staff view to print sheet music? I gave up on trying to get any DAW to do that and use another program (Notion) if I really need to write a score or print parts. DAWs and notation software are 2 different beasties IMHO.

Wait a minute, didn't X3 come out in 2013? Hmm...

Although, to be fair, the 30-day trial version of X3 did finally come out in 2014.

Anyway, still plenty of 2014 left, Cakewalk, so don't get cocky yet!

In reality, my review was published in November last year. So, the award was for 2013 (audiofanzine).
The english version of my review was published a few days ago, but X3 is sooo good than the award is still running for 2014 ;)

I have to go along with you on that, Dave. I've only once used Sonar for preparing sheet music and I doubt I'll ever do it again, not because Sonar lacks anything I can imagine; I simply don't read music. I've tried and tried over the years, but I have a mental block or something. It just never sticks no matter how hard I work at it.

So I've resigned myself to being an idiot savant... musically, at least.

With all due respect, shouldn't it be

"Best Product of 2014 - * at least so far *"

with some 11 months & one week to go?

I mean how do you decide on something this early on in the year without waiting it out until Dec. 31 after all the entries have been submitted, accounted for & equally considered?

Just sayin'...

Well, I hope it was clear that I was joking, as I really don't take such "awards" very seriously.

That said, it's a quite well done and helpful review (of X3b) with some interesting suggestions for further enhancements, even if I take no account of the "award".

A reward is not an absolute truth. It's mainly there to demonstrate a quality/quantity/price ratio superior to others. 2013 or 2014, it's not important; Sonar is probably the best Daw of the moment. This, is the most important.
