QUestion: what is an assets file?

Is it something I can get rid of?

    Asset files are used by gobbler.
    They are controlled by Preferences > File > Advanced "Save Asset Manifests with Projects". To see advanced settings make sure to select the Advanced radio button at the bottom of the Preferences dialog.
