I was very excited about this as a possible P5 replacement. Not $399 worth of excitement, though.

I'm trying to figure out what it is supposed to offer... All the crap on their page just seems to be "stuff a DAW does". Like they say thing like "Multitrack recording" and "Audio clips". Really, never seen that one before, well except for Cool Edit Pro back in 1998... and every single DAW thereafter. Maybe it does something amazing, but if so their marketing sucks. They basically just seem to be saying "It's a DAW!" Ya, ok, well I can get lots of those, and for less than $400. The stuff they show looks to maybe compete with the base version of Sonar X3. My guess is they spent too much time on making a Linux version, not enough time on making it something that would draw people in.

I'd forgotten about this - if they had released this a few years ago it might have been exciting!!!!

BitWig? Sounds like a brand for a toupee or something like that. Other than having a dark shade, the UI and workflow looks similar to Ableton Live. I'll also pass.

It looks a lot more similar to a certain Cakewalk product that's been discontinued for 7 years or so.

Yes. I saw your comment earlier before I posted ;-) . Just out of curiosity it will be interesting to see how the Wig holds up, it might do okay but the price isn't entry level.. I guess a demo should be available soon after release and then I guess I might read reviews and feedback later.

John Boy, you guys are a tough sale. But I agree with you.
Hey, if someone wants me to buy a $400 toy, I need to be convinced that it is worth $400. At that price, you have a lot of DAW options: You can get Sonar Studio, Vegas Pro Edit, Fl Studio Signature, Studio One Professional, Reaper, Reason, and so on for the same or less money. You are also just $50-100 of being in range of Sonar Producer, Cubase, Abelton Live Standard, Digital Performer, and so on. So at the price they've chosen, there's a lot of competition. It isn't like they are cheap enough to have an advantage over most of the competition, nor cheap enough to be a "just get it because why not" kind of thing. They have to sell it. Also, here at least, they are dealing with people who already have a DAW, maybe more than one. I personally own Sonar and Vegas. So they have to convince us that it does something the toys we already have don't. I have to see it offer me something that neither Sonar nor Vegas does, and that something needs to be worth $400. And the issue with what they are advertising is that companies love to show of what makes them cool, different. Look at Cakewalk's page on Sonar: Lots of pictures n' words on Prochannel, ARA, the included instruments, and so on. They want to draw you in with the cool stuff you get, particularly the stuff you can't have elsewhere. So that all the Bitwig guys talk about and show is basic DAW stuff, well it probably means that's ALL there is. It isn't real likely they have something real cool, but they just forgot to advertise it.

I did for a number of reasons... (no pun) 1.. they'd made me wait ages for something.. 2+ years as I'd rather not give my money to ableton. 2.. it's v1.. it's a gamble.. get the people to buy into it first.. studio one sorta did that 3.. it's priced wrongly for v1 in this current market it shares more with ableton than it does with p5.. you can't compare the 2. wanna see how they deal with support etc..

P5 was the first thing I thought of when I saw the beta demos of Bitwig, but in much of their promotional propoganda they mention Ableton, so they must feel that Ableton's market is where their potential users are. Also, all of the demo videos I saw focused on one type of musical style (which just reinforced the "P5" stigma) which makes Bitwig a big "meh" for me.

IIRC the majority of the development team are from Ableton. When they originally announced a great many of the features they were touting were not in Ableton and people had been screaming for them for years (such as support for two monitors). I don't plan on a purchase but I fail to see how competition can be a negative...it can only spur innovation (when warranted) in my opinion. Regards,
