Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3?

I'm trying to send Midi Drum (out) track to Session Drummer (in) track - but can't seem to use it as a soft Synth?

Do I need to modify the Session Drummer 3 Properties from the Plug-in Manager to get it to work this way?  I see it is already configured as a Soft Synth, I can though hit the virtual kit and listen to some sounds???  I'm Confused (~)

Thanks In advanceJim

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/28 07:41:26 (permalink)
If I understand what you are trying to do, you have midi data on a midi track, and you want to use Session Drummer 3 to play that midi data.

You need to connect the dots between SD3, a midi track, and one or more audio tracks, to be able to hear/record drums with SD3.

Given that you already have the midi data on a midi track, once you have SD3 loaded with the desired kit in the synth rack, you will need to (this is just a simple example):

1.  Insert a stereo track for the drum sounds to be heard.
2.  Set the Input for the audio track for drums to the stereo output from SD3.
3.  Set the Output for the midi track with the drum data to SD3.
4.  Hit Play

Give the above a try and post back,

I'm not sure I understand how you're trying to use SD. Are you trying something else than making drum tracks with SD the standard way?
There should be no need to separately send anything anywhere, as all the needed routings come automatically when inserting soft synth / SD. The only way it can work is (unless you use simple instrument track) with MIDI track with output to SD and an audio track with input from SD.

If you specifically want to use sends for FX purposes or such, the send must be set on the SD audio output track.

Ok Reading through both posts here, provided lots of clues - I got it to work for me..

1. I have Midi track with drum instructions,
2. I send Midi track out to CW TTS Soft Synth (SS) track.
3. The out of the CW TTS SS sends out to SD SS Instrument track.

I can now select a kit from the program in SD and send Midi to it via CW TTS SS..

Still not sure why I need to have the CW TTS in the middle though - its the only way I can get it to work...

That TTS-1 is totally unnecessary there. I can't help wondering a little the logic behind it. It's the SD sounds you want to hear, not General Midi from TTS.
You have two synths in a row. Remove the TTS and do as Robert advises.

Yeah I tried what Robert suggested but didn't seem to work - once I added the CW TTS in between midi and SD, I'm now able to select a kit in SD and works... not sure why what Robert suggested didn't work for me - its what I expected from how the other synths work - SD for me doesn't behave the same as the other SSs??? I'll keep digging though to see why its behaving the way it is for me..

I think we need now a detailed description of how you insert SD.
It's very straightforward procedure, clearly (IMO) described in the help files and tutorial (#4??).

If your trying to use the MIDI files within in Session Drummer you can drag and drop them any where in the project, here is a figure diagram from the help file( i hope CW don't have problem with Copying and pasting this):

Just left click, hold and drag that little bity note icon.

I hope this can help, I prefer Session Drummer myself as opposed to every new fangled attempt at a software drummer( of course that's my opinion).

I have NO idea how in the world you are setting things up - by all means, please detail EXACTLY how you have things set up.

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/28 10:32:31 (permalink)
Sounds to me like the OP is trying to record MIDI performance data to a MIDI track in SONAR (essentially using it as an old-school sequencer like Cakewalk 5.0 for DOS) while using the sounds in SD as the target to produce the audio output. Makes perfect sense to me, but I've never tried it, yet. In other words, he's looking to fire SD like a MIDI sampler, maybe?

That is certainly something I would try if I didn't have access to a live drummer, or didn't use simple loops or patterns for a scratch drum line like I often do. This shouldn't be hard really - as I was doing it in Cakewalk 3, 4, 5 in DOS back in the 90s using a MIDI drum machine as the target of the MIDI performance data.

Sounds to me like SD is inserted in the FX bin of a track. If that's the case, I recommend the OP delete it, go to Insert >Soft Synth, choose Session Drummer and then the Simple Instrument of separate MIDI and Audio tracks. Then drag the MIDI clip to the new track (MIDI or Simple Instrument).

Session Drummer works like any other soft synth.

An easy way to get started with Session Drummer is with a predefined track template. Right-click in the track strip area and select a template from Insert From Track Template > Soft Synth Track Templates > Session Drummer 3. After inserting the new instance of Session Drummer, drag the MIDI data into the new Session Drummer MIDI track.

Where did the MIDI clip come from? If it was not included with SONAR, you may want to look in the Event Viewer to make sure it only contains note information. Remove non-note data, if any, from the MIDI clip.

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/28 19:20:27 (permalink)
Hi All,

Thanks for all your responses - I'm totally confused now...

It was late in the evening yesterday and I thought I was able to select a different kit with the way I had it setup - I must have been tired because when I try now to do the same - the kit is still the same - I also noticed in the synth rack the session drummer icon was not the same as the icon in the session drummer track in track view, but was the same as the CW TTS Synth track...

Ok so what I am trying to do is use some old midi file, it has some drum data in it.  If I use the CW TTS Soft Synth it sounds too digitized - not good enough.  I am hoping to use SD3 in this case to get a more realistic sounding drum kit.

I'm expecting the Session Drummer Soft Synth works the same way that CW TTS Soft Synth works.  That's is, with CW TTS I drag it from here:

Then in the Midi track OUT select the CW TTS Soft Synth Track to listen to the midi drum

Can the same procedure be used for Session Drummer? - I tried several times and I get no sound, I don't even see the level indicator in the session drummer track receiving any data but do see the level indicators in the midi track working..

Hope that make sense...

BTW I use to have an old windows version of Cakewalk, I can't remember the version of it as it use to be on an old Windows XP PC - I have a backup of it but the ntbackup utility used in XP of the bkf file is no longer supported in Windows 8 (I might extract from the setup CD of WinXP the ntbackup utility or maybe setup a virtual Windows XP so I can again access the backup file and install the OLD Cakewalk Software).  So I think a lot of my concepts are taken from the old cakewalk software.

Yes, it works in a similar way. One difference, Session Drummer is inserted into a project without samples loaded in the synth. To load sounds into Session Drummer, select a program, kit or load each pad with an sfz or audio file. FWIW, the predefined track templates take care of this too.

WRT the old MIDI file, there may be data in the file TTS-1 can process or ignore which are causing Session Drummer to go silent. It may be necessary to edit the MIDI track in the event view and remove non-note data from the track.

One thing the OP may not be doing is loading a drum kit into SD3.

The routing is simple
MIDI track to SD3. The out of the MIDI track goes to the in of SD3. It will have audio track/s producing the audio. This assumes you have let it create them when you used the synth rack to open SD3.

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/28 20:41:49 (permalink)
For the audio tracks, either let the Insert Soft Synth dialog box add them, or I had included manually adding them in my earlier post in this thread.

In any case, I can get output from SD3 in a matter of less than a minute, doing it all manually, so I do not understand what the issue is.

I think enough folks have weighed in on this that it would help for the OP to review and respond to a bunch of posts, as all we can do is speculate (and when one speculates, they make a spec out of, er, em, never mind)

In Session Drummer I have selected Prog (ie StevenSlate_OldZepKit_Wet3.prog) have Midi track out to Session Drummer track and still no good, I mean if I hit the snare in Session Drummer plugin sounds fine - but when I hit play in the project the sound indicators are working in the midi but not in the SD track.

Am I able to send a copy of a small project that includes a midi drum track and session drummer because I can't get it to work..

Or can I send a copy of the midi file to see if someone else has problems with it..

Uploaded it to skydrive account and shared public under the Music folder you'll find Drums.mid

Edit: Remove URL to midi file//////

(BTW I also used event list to remove any none - data events from the midi track)

The file worked fine after I removed the first six lines of non-note data in the Event view. There are two  RPN, a wheel and 3 control instructions at the beginning of the track.

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/29 02:51:23 (permalink)
Thanks Scook for checking it out.

I have it working now but I think what I've been doing wrong (which seems right to me) is I have been dragging Session drummer from VST Instruments into as a new track and then the Midi file I imported to a midi track I set the OUT to the Session Drummer track.  This is how I have been working with the CW TTS Soft Synth which works just fine.

What I did differently this time is followed your step ie: Insert From Track Template > Soft Synth Track Templates > Session Drummer 3

I then imported the Midi file directly into the SD3 Midi track - also removed the Events you mentioned and all works great. I see now for each symbol and drum a separate track.. There too many SD tracks in the folder now - anyway I can live with that, will need to work out how to quickly add effects to each of the tracks in SD folder, (if I need to) instead of each individually, (or do I apply the effects in the SD App?)...

Thanks all for your help

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/29 10:38:04 (permalink)
As I indicated earlier, the setup of Session Drummer is the same as any other soft synth. Like TTS-1 it can have multiple outputs. And just like TTS-1 not all outputs need be used. The reasons for the template suggestion were:
  • To guarantee the synth was setup correctly.
  • To illustrate how to use a template for a multi-out synth. Many find templates a convenient and time saving approach for inserted synths like Session Drummer.

To insert Session Drummer from the browser or menus:
1) Drag or insert the synth into a project

2) From the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog select
  • "Instrument Track" or
  • "MIDI Source" and "First Synth Audio Output" or
  • "MIDI Source" and "All Synth Audio Outputs: Stereo"

3) Add samples to Session Drummer, either a program, kit, or individual instrument sfz or audio files. Also, if working with multiple outputs, use the drop downs at the bottom of the Session Drummer mixer to assign the instruments to an output.

Then import the MIDI file. In this case, open the MIDI data in the event view and remove the 6 lines at the top of the view.

There are a couple of videos at http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/SONARU.aspx/Master-Class on Drum Production which may be of interest. The videos use a pre-X series version of SONAR but have updated subtitles for the X series.

Last month a series of Session Drummer templates were made available which include effects http://blog.cakewalk.com/free-quick-kits/

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/29 20:36:05 (permalink)
Thanks Scook!  It's understood perfectly now!

One question about SI-Bass Guitar,..  How do I use this with Midi track?

following the logic in this thread I would think it would be simple, what I have tried and expected it to work is I inserted new Soft Synth, ie: Insert From Track Template > Soft Synth Track Templates > Studio Instruments Bass , Now I notice there is no Midi track with separate instrument track as was done with the SD3, it created one Bass Track...

Anyway double clicked the instrument Icon and get the cakewalk Bass and selected a program, now from Bass midi track selected the output to the new Bass instrument track, hit play. No sound coming from the bass track????  However once again if I use CW TTS as the audio track from the bass midi track, I have no problems...

Is there any wonder why I am getting all confused?

Re: Is it possible to send MIDI track out to Session Drummer 3? 2014/01/29 20:47:22 (permalink)
There are two basic type of tracks, Audio and MIDI. There is a third type which may be used with softsynths, called an Instrument track. An Instrument track is a hybrid of an Audio and a MIDI track. It sounds like the SI-Bass template uses an Instrument track. MIDI data goes into the Instrument track and the Instrument track will playback the audio. It is possible to split an Instrument track into it's Audio and MIDI tracks by right-clicking the Instrument track strip and selecting "Split Instrument Track". It is also possible to create an Instrument track from a related Audio and MIDI track pair by right-clicking either track strip and selecting "Make Instrument Track".

Ok thanks that is good info - I just tried it and still doesn't work..  That is;

1. Insert From Track Template > Soft Synth Track Templates > Studio Instruments Bass
2. Split Instrument Track
3. Import Midi data to Midi track of the split instrument Midi track
4. Remove any none data events
5. Hit play and still nothing...

I checked the plugin manager and see the following - so it should work, right?

OH! Hang on - I armed the track and hit play and it works!!!  I now unarm it and it still works! So something by arming and disarming has flicked the track on...

So all working now - Would like to know why, so that it helps me further understand this behaviour...

Forget about the plug-in manager, once the plug-ins are scanned in, it's job is pretty much done. Splitting the instrument track was unnecessary, the MIDI could have been imported into the instrument track. I suspect you are going to continue to have issues with imported MIDI because of the instructions at the beginning of the files. Before playing your third party MIDI files, make sure to clean them up. When the sfz engine synths encounter files like the one I saw, they go silent. This includes Session Drummer, DimPro, Rapture and the SI synths.

Ok I see - so even though I cleared the events at the beginning in the midi - seems the arming may have reset the engine...
