Cold in GA...

This morning is the second time I've seen the temp go sub zero here, we are not on a mountain either. Screenshot from my phone, Weather Underground...

It was in the low 40s this AM in Tampa I hope Jonathan (Linear Phase) survived, lol.

BTW... we didn't just have a little snow. We had a lot of ice and people here have no idea how to drive on ice, and sometimes you just can't, the car/truck just slides to the side or somewhere and you just go with it. Anyway, NOAA weather said that ATL was going to get little to nothing and middle GA was going to get hit hard so our limited equipment was staged in middle GA. The weather did something else. Everyone left work about 12:00 to 12:15 and by 12:35 the roads had gone from good to icy. At the same time school buses left to take kids home, parents left home to go get kids... everyone got stuck in the ice, ds were closed everywhere. Semis were sideways on all the interstate highways. Thankfully my wife saw what was happening and got home by 11:00, called our daughter and tried to tell her. She got stuck in a jam going to the school, the police closed the road, I think she will get her car today, the kids have had a BLAST!! BUT... it wasn't just a little snow, it was ice and most people here (if they aren't sliding already) either hit the brakes or the gas when they start to slide and you know how much that helps...

MAN... I am ready for springtime.

I hope I'm wrong but I have this picture in my head of whole neighborhoods of homes in Georgia built on cinder block foundations with no basements having busted or frozen water lines. When I lived in Albany I don't think I had ever seen a home with a basement until I went  north. And all of those mobile homes with 2x2 walls..Brrrrrrr.

Bad things can happen  when people get cold and desperate and aren't thinking clearly. Hopefully Bubba won't think it's a good idea to bring the propane barbecue grill inside for heat.People get hurt from carbon monoxide poisoning.

When it got really cold my grandmother used to turn her stove on and use the heat from it to help heat the house. That isn't a bad idea really. Things just aren't designed to handle that down there. What is typical in Minnesota is not typical in Georgia and they aren't prepared for it.

When it got into single digits here the news channel ran an info piece that out local utilities had advised we try to be conservative....might as well talk to the wind. People who can't afford oil plug in those portable space heaters and the heat pumps are all on backup heat. Not many people will heed the call and eventually if it had gone on longer the grid would have started to suffer. Can't blame people for trying to stay warm, but some of them think warm is 72F and their systems can't do that. There's going to be some whopper electric bills.

Good news-It is supposed to get warmer soon.

As I've mentioned before I don't use heating in my apartment, and this winter has been a real test of my Geordie mettle. It's averaged 15-25F for the last month which is pretty damn cold for New York. I'm happy to say my Geordie credentials have remained intact and I haven't cried once. I go in some people's apartments and they have the thermostat at 90 and they're sitting around in shorts. What is this BS where people feel like they have to heat their homes to the extreme opposite of what it is outside? Winter is a treat, embrace the cold!

It's barely reached zero here yet, but rained pretty much every day. It's the dark days that get to me the most, really need some sunlight now. Roll on Spring.

I'm not sure how many people go the what I would consider that extreme. Man you don't even need a refrigerator

I turned off my heat pump and started my coal stove which is in the basement and luckily where all of my water lines are. With the setup I have  my home takes a few days to absorb the heat like a big heat sink. It is warm within a few hours but it gets really nice after a few days. Last evening it was at 72F because I can't make it any cooler than that. Upstairs is cooler but we only sleep up there.Outside temps have been in the single digits overnight and even into the minus. The funny thing is that by Friday I'll be able to restart the heat pump because we will get into the 40's by noon.

I still like the winter(please don't hit me). The snow is a pretty sight like a big white paint job on everything.

Just a tip or two if you're in a cold place and aren't prepared for it.

Crack your water valve ever so slightly overnight. The running water will keep the lines from icing up. Open up cabinet doors where water lines are to let in heat.

If you have a bathroom with a vent fan, you know, the kind that takes all the heat out of the space. Temporarily cover it .You could make something up with magnets and a pie cover...or simply tape it over.

If you have a spare unused chimney cover it, plug the hole inside. It just vaccums all the warm air right out of your house, especially if it's windy outside.

Find a fat buddy to snuggle with.Skinny people don't give off  as much heat..... Ok maybe that's not such a good idea.  Scratch that last comment.

I'm okay with winter.  It's cold.  People stay inside.  When they're in their homes, they're not out on the road.  I like that.  When they do go out and drive, there's a possibility they might slide off of the road at any moment.  You don't get that kind of excitement in the summer.  Granted, it would be better if the Department of Transportation would put in a few jumps and half-pipes to make the drive more entertaining, but you take what you can get.

Winter is fine, theoretically. Here in Finland the problem is it's so long. A common misconception is the weather in the nordic countries is terrribly cold. It isn't extreme, but the cold period lasts for 4-5 months, and that's the hard part. Especially because in december-january there's light only about 4 hours a day at worst, in northern Finland not a second. There they have a two month night. Then, in the summer, it has happened several times that the northernmost part of FInland is the warmest place in Europe. Really, there, over a hundred miles above the POle Circle it's been warmer than in Spain or Italy. Then again, it doesn't last for long :o/

It depends whether you're shivering in phase or not :o)
    Phase cancellation leads to hypothermia.

0 isn't always 0, if different scales are used!  0 degrees Celcius isn't bad, 0 degrees Fahrenheit is downright cold but at 0 degrees Kelvin even molecules don't move!

@ Starise... SOWEGA didn't get quite so cold, but cold enough! I went to Albany Jr College in 1970, I didn't know you lived there, did I? I know lots of folks in Albany, I grew up down the Rd in Moultrie. We need to talk sometimesI bet we know some of the same people. I've friends in radio in Albany. I "came of age" in Albany. Good memories.

So far we`ve had a rather mild winter, the lake here is still ice free.
