Scary stuff.

I read Craig Andertons link under a heading recently about news that doesn't make the news in a past post and I was horrified to learn that we have a few reactors over here in the states that are leaking minimal amounts of radiation. In further reading on the latest Japan incident it is apparent that the severity of that situation was greatly minimized to the public by the powers that be, even to this day. Radiation from that plant has ended up in stawberries in CA and in some fish brought to the states among other places.

I  hope they are being forthright with their appraisal of that situation to the locals. The trend seems to be the opposite, so as not to alarm anyone. I hope it really is minimal and no one is hurt.

The worst thing about nuclear power is that they can't possibly plan for every scenario. They have backup systems and plenty of safety systems but if they fail for any reason and the cat gets out of the bag there is no going back.

I wish everyone over there the best outcome.

No big deal. It warranted about 10 secs on the news tonight, apparently staff are returning to work and there's no threat to the public.

Are they sure it's the reactor and not some misplaced vindaloo from Steve?

So they're the country that bought the used reactor from Japan!

I went for a job interview there many years ago. A few common items, such as watches with luminous dials were not allowed on site as in some areas they would trip alarms.

I don't know a lot but I think the idea of nuclear power is just asking for trouble. The majority of nuclear power plants leak tritium because the tritium molecule is so small. Tritium interacts with oxygen and creates ozone. Ozone is normally in the upper atmosphere. They measure ozone levels to calculate air pollution (smog). They tell us is comes from burning carbon fuels, from cars and trucks etc... but it comes from the tritium leaking from nuclear power plants... and that is when "nothing is going wrong".
This planet thrives on CO2, trees and plants breathe it, it is healthy for the planet but some in power tell us lies to further their own causes and gain more power.
I don't consider nuclear power to be clean power, not at all. I think it is playing with fire or worse. Even when it is working as they say it should, it is causing problems, bad ones.

Hi,

There was one reactor near here, about 30 minutes, that got taken down because of problems and also the folks in Portland and Vancouver, did not like it so close.

Also the reactors in the Tri Cities (Richland, Pasco and Kennewick here in the state of WA) also had issues, and it became a dumping ground that continually has issues with radiation. A little south of here just off I-84 in Boardman, is also a repository of radio-active materials that also has had issues for some years. This one has WW2 stuff as well.

You can only hope to contain these, but it is not likely that any information will be leaked unless it gets so bad that the outside folks know, and the media will simply just turn it on against it so fast. Sadly, like the problem in Japan with that reactor, it will basically render the area unlive-able for the next 100,000 years anyway, so it is weird that we do not hear anything about it, and the media is all quiet about it all.

Best not to scare the lemmings I guess!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

That explains some of the mutants I know from that area...

I'm not far from San Onofre.  They've had so many problems there that it's going to be shut down.
