Flying with a guitar - revisited

The topic seems to pop up once in a while and Guitar World has an interesting article about certain revisions dating from 2012 actually, though it's the first time I'd heard about them.

Good news for musicians flying within the US. :)

Well, not to get into politics not allowed, but some will probably consider the strings of the guitar to be a weapon.

I bet there's still some guys from the Highland Games that don't believe the law that bagpipes may be thrown out the door at 33,000 feet to help the plane fly better...

ok, so the determination is "at the time you board the aircraft".  So you get to your seat, the overhead locker is already half full and is 2 inches to short for your monster gear flight case anyway... You check under your seat and find a bass sized monster gear flight case already there belonging to the guy in the seat next to you.

You've nowhere to put your guitar, and no way to get back to the gate to buy another ticket (as per the requirements..)

    Sounds like fun.

I was also thinking that the real big issue is that some of those cases are made of cardboard! Yeah, a guitar is gonna get crushed. I wanna see a hard shell case get crushed, because if it does, that would be considered lawsuit time, for serious recklessness and everything else.

I find this thread bizarre, to say the least, since any ANY airline, not knowing that a band is flying with them, or a musician with a name, is not only stupid, they will pay for their ignorance sooner or later. It's part of our radio/tv madness ... they ignored you, and when you interviewed the artist it gets mentioned and it happens enough times, you can do some amazing things ... like remove a sheriff, remove an alderman, remove member of congress ... how far do you wanna go and play games?

Any bad "press" out there about these things, is serious, and can you imagine Virgin getting that, when Mr. Balls got his start stealing from musicians?

    ...

Yeah, but the slut is a lot more fun! Well, in my days, they were! Today, I'm not sure!

Let's see ... Tangerine Dream and slut and dope; Pink Floyd and slut and dope; Yes with slut and dope; Hawkwind with slut and dope; Nektar with slut and dope; Babe Ruth with slut and dope; Tangerine Dream at the Greek Theater with slut and dope ... it was all a part of the experience, Craig.

Btw, the same slut saw 3 of these with me!

Hehehe!!! No regrets. She's still nice in my book!

Obviously, the best option is not to fly at all, as far as I'm concerned.
Second best would be not to have to fly with your guitar.
Third would be to fly with a cheap guitar you don't care for all that much.

If you really have to fly with a precious instrument... Well, at least now you got yourself a little more wiggle room. But it's still an awful idea. The whole flying thing, I mean.

Steinberger brooms are the easiest to fly with (and the only guitar I've ever flown with).

I would have thought a Parker Fly would work better... :P

I've flown once with one Epi LP and my US strat. Virgin folks saw me with my guitars and offered to take them onboard in the staff's own storage space, free of charge before I could even ask anything. They're the best.

    Flying still sucks though.

I was asked to bring a guitar with me when I went to Argentina the last time. I thought about that for all of 3 seconds before saying "No!"

I did not relish the idea of traveling with a guitar for 2 weeks to the places we were going, nor did I think that carrying it on the several planes and through the airports and security in foreign countries sounded like a fun idea.

Instead, having been to Argentina before, and knowing there were a number of musicians there whose guitars I could borrow that were already set up on stage..... I simply asked that one be provided for me as the need arose.

Everything worked out perfectly and there was never a time that I didn't have a guitar when I needed one. One fellow there even offered to give me a guitar to carry with me, a spare that he had, for my duration in country. I did not need it because every place we went had a stage setup ready to roll.

My solution for Spain and Russia was this.

Since we could only take a few luggages, I unbolted the neck and placed both parts in a huge bag full of clothes. When we arrived in Spain and my bags were missing, I sure was glad that I hadn't taken my prized US strat w/ me, as much as I missed it.

99$, saved me tons of headaches, and it's still fun to play - it's my alternate tuning/slide guitar, when I'm looking for ideas. The pick up is on the muddier side, but, for $99 - man, I wish I had access to cheap guitars that were that playable when I grew up...
