Mic records even if volume is down on AudioBox

I have also posted in Presonus Audiobox forum, but I thought someone else HERE may have experienced this little quirk...

Hi all..

I'm not sure what's up here.

I'm using a Rode NT3 condenser with phantom power.  Recording into Sonar X3 DAW

What's strange to me is that even if the mic channel on the Audiobox USB is totally turned down I still have signal going through to the DAW. The mic channel volume control does allow for me to boost the level, but if I want to turn it entirely down I can't.

I've even turned down the input in control panel manage audio devices to no input and it still gets signal. I even went so far as to mute the input under properties for the Audiobox in control panel and still have throughout.

I am absolutely puzzled. Can anyone enlighten me ? I've been unable to find a similar post.

Many thanks...
Michael

Some audio interfaces (Mic Pres) do not necessarily shut the signal completely off when the gain control is turned fully anti clockwise. It is not a bad thing actually as it prevents you from accidently having something turned right down and not realise it. ie you will always be seeing a signal present.

It should not be a problem unless with the control fully anitclockwise you are still getting too much signal into your DAW and it is overloading it.

I assume you meant 'turn OFF' my phantom power. That defeats the purpose of having a condenser mic. It also renders it useless.

Thanks for the reply.. Investigating... Nothing I can't work around. I just thought I was missing something, but judging from the response I got on the pre-sonus forum, it looks like it's 'just the way it is'......

    Hi Jeff...

That's what I've found. It's just not something that can be avoided apparently when you have phantom on. It has just made me much more cognizant of my levels. It all sprang from I was recording an instrument in the other input, but was still hearing the mic even though it was zeroed out and thought I must have something wrong in my config.

    Apparently not.

    Thanks all for your responses.

It took at least a month to find out what was the problem...support at Presonus was...terrible (to put it politely). Can't find nothing on the net, tried this and that, went to music store (where i bought the soundcard) many times to finally threaten the salesman ( politely) that he'll has to take back the soudcard if he was unable to find the problem... So finally to realize that once the record button is engage there is no control over the level.....so it comes down to the soundcard for the level and if the level is at zero and it's still clipping while recording well you have to put something between the instrument (guitar/mic in my case guitar) and the soundcard. After i've found that others had the same problem and solve it by buying a DI box...that worked for me....

I returned this interface, tech support told me if I wanted to turn the levels down all the way to by a DI box.
this would give me better control over hot levels.

I laughed and brought it back for a full refund.

there is a reason those interfaces are cheap money ;-)
