Water To My Soul
Here is another song that I have done as a re-track. I originally wrote this back in 2008 and recorded it on Home Studio. I thought it was time to take it back out, polish it up some and rewrite/ re-track the song. I basically kept nothing and completely started over from scratch. Let me know what your thoughts are on this one and if the mix sounds balanced. Appreciate it. Vox seems buried. Nice overall mix though. Good song.

This has a nice slow drive to it. Made me want to pick up my guitar and play along. Guitars, bass and drums are clear and strong. Nice placement and separation. The vox don't seem to have the same clarity as the rest of the track. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it sounds like the pre's may have been overdriven and a possible phasing issue(comb filtering?) mostly noticeable when the vox are layered. Nice tune. I was rockin' to it.

Thanks Robert for listening. I had no idea what comb filtering was, so I had to read up on it a little. That's strange, because I have had my vocal mic and pre set up for pretty much the same settings for the last several years. I keep it surrounded by my reflection filter and don't really adjust the pre settings much because the mic stand, mic type, pre and position are pretty much all the same. I watched my levels really close on this one as well. The one thing that I did a little differently on this song was experiment with some of the presets in Nectar Elements on the vocal. Can changing the timing on the Sonitus delay so that the left and right are a little different timing cause something like comb filtering; I messed around with the timing between right and left for effect. Hey Bapu, appreciate you listening to this one. If the levels of the vox sound to low to others as well, I can raise them up a little. I was trying to get the instrumentation to kind of wrap around the vocals on this song. Trying to make the instruments have a larger role on this song.

I have posted a new version of this song. I lowered the rhythm guitars by about a db and then raised the vocals overall my a couple of db's. I hope that makes the vocals sit better to where they are heard, but also leaves the guitars as a big part of the mix. I think it also brought out the drums and bass slightly which seems to sound better.

Cool song. Your influences definitely come through in your music. Excellent production! I Wish I could get my stuff to sound that clean and separated.

Good song Mike! I like the vocals. I also like the bass. I know it's a laidback part, but it kind of makes the song for me.

Mike, this is a very cool song that reminds me of San Francisco of the late 60's. It has a very heightened awareness kind of vibe ;) In this version, your voice sounds clear and strong. I'm really digging what you've been putting out lately.

Yeah! Noticeably better. I wonder if that extra db might have been lending some modulation to the vox? Anyhow, it sounds a lot cleaner now. Now that Lynn mentions it, I do get a kind of Haight Ashbury vibe from this. Maybe that's why I like it. This one's on its way to my favorites list.

Mucho gracias, Ed!
MetalTek, thank you. I used to try to mask or shun all my influences in an effort to sound "modern". Quite a while back, I pretty much just learned to embrace my natural sound and use it to its advantages. Really happy that you are hearing a clean sound, that is the biggest thing I have been going for lately.
Clint, I appreciate you noticing the bass on this one; I have always liked this laid back bass style, in this song as well. In the chorus, I decided to kick into a more driving bass style. I kind of like that contrast. I couldn't hear any issues with the vocals originally either; glad they are sounding clear now. I finally had a chance to actually try out the ARA Melodyne integration on this song, I had just a couple of slightly flat verse notes on one of the verses. On my last couple of songs I didn't have to correct any pitch. I am really liking the new ease of use with the ARA integration.
Lynne, thanks brother you have been a sense of support from the first time I ever decided to share my songs and I have greatly appreciated it.
Robert, glad everything is sounding much better now.
Jimmy, I had a lot of fun recording guitars on this one. Thanks for listening and commenting, Brother.

Just so you know, I meant that in a good way. You don't sound "just like" anyone. I hear the influences but it sounds original and doesn't sound "dated". Cheers!

Great song, love the guitars. I was listening through headphones and the separation was a little disconcerting at the beginning but got easier to listen to as the song progressed. You said you were after separation and to have the guitars wrap around the vocals so i guess that worked well. Glad you brought up the vocals a bit, I'm a big fan of "hearing the vocals".

La Void, Appreciate the listen and comments.
Rebel007, Sorry I threw you off balance there. I hope when the second guitar comes in in the next measure you got centered back up again. I'm sure by the third measure when the bass enters down the middle you got centered up again. Hope I didn't cause any permanent damage. :-)

hot drum mix! heheh..... the openness of the rhythm guitar allows it sit nice and upfront (the kit) i hear the vox loud and clear.... i'd love to hear some more bottom from the bass, to help balance the high end you got going with the guitars, vocals, snares and hats i think the bass should be the hottest thing in the mix on this one..... dig the solo section at the end....

Hi Mike. Man, I love the tone of the guitars, and I'm digging that main riff. Love the words as usual. The mix sounded good and I love the drum sound. The only critique I would have is that during the opening beat, you can tell the bass drum has very little damping. It rings a little too much to me, but that's just a personal opinion. I still think the song sounds great and has a cool raw feel to it.

Bat,
I have always been a big fan of your music, your mixes, and the tones you get on your creations; therefore your review of this song was extra special for me. I guess I am starting to do something's right. I will take a look at the Bass again. I love a lot of bass in songs, but because of that, I tend to overdue the bass much of the time. Because I am aware of this handicap of mine, I consciously dial it back a little on some tracks.....figuring that I am overdoing it.
Lead foot, thanks for listening brother. I hadn't notice that about the opening drum sounds, now is am going to have to listen to it again and see if I notice what you are pointing out.
Dan, glad you like this one. It was long overdue for a rewrite and I like the way it has come out this time,
