The burden of having children.

So, my daughter who is studying for her MBA degree is talking to the lovely Mrs. Modbod about how her eight year old lap top is really giving her grief in her studies.  TLMM, looks at me and asks if a desk top computer would be a cheaper solution than a comparable lap top.  Yeah, if you don't have to have a lap top, you can get more bang for the buck out of a desktop PC.  I mentioned a local guy who can put together nice PCs and leave all the gooblety gook that usually loaded on a Big Box PC at the local Best Buy store.

And then the plot thickens....

TLMM asks, "Aren't you due for a new computer?  Can't you get a new computer for yourself and give your old one to her?"

Hmmm, I suppose I could go for an eight core machine with tons more RAM in order to help out this young lady.

It doesn't get any better than this.  [;D]

EDIT: He's not gonna do it. See the final results later.

I also use this trick.  Unfortunately, my music computer is now over 4 years old but it still is doing the job especially since adding a couple SSD drives.

Nah.  I've got to let everyone know, I couldn't do it.  Too much money to put into it.  I mean, REALLY?  Here I am with an AMD Athlon II X4 620, happy as a clam, running my little projects just fine and I'm going to go straight to 8 cores?  Maybe if I live that long and get super busy with 100 plus track counts loaded with native plug ins.

Good judgement bubbled up to the surface and I think I will be able to see a radical improvement over what I have with a Z87 based motherboard and a i7-4770K processor.  And I may still be able to support my mic pre habit a little longer.

Ok, no more talking about it.  I pulled the trigger on the Pro Studio model with the 4770K cpu at Purrrfect Audio.  Jim's been giving me free advice for, what might be going on, twenty years now.  Time to pay back the favor.

The 4771 and 4770k (at stock speed - 3.9GHz) are essentially the same CPU.
The 4770k is multiplier-unlocked (by Intel) for controlled over-clocking.

It get's more interesting.  My new UAD2 Quad was waiting for me when I got home today.  So since I have more PCIe slots, I guess I can run the quad and my solo card.  It's getting gooder and gooder.
