[Answered] Sonar X3 on two computers?

Do I have to buy two complete downloads or is it ok to have the same one on my home computer and my Surface Pro Tablet that I use on the road?

Thank you;

The EULA used to read "one computer only."  I don't know that it's changed.

There is no problem installing one licensed copy of SONAR on two machines as long as the software is used on one machine at a time. The home/travel PC example above is permitted.

Yes - Cakewalk has popped in from time to time on this, and has consistently indicated installing it on 2 computers is OK, as long as you only use it on 1 at a time.

Re: Sonar X3 on two computers? 2014/02/12 11:05:07 (permalink)
Yea, Cakewalk has confirmed more than one install on these forums several times.  More importantly, you can install and register it on more than one computer.  They just ask you not to use more than one of them at a time.

Which makes sense, esp. to keep the dongleless environment.

You will see copies of SONAR for cheap, advertised w/ serial number.  These are copies that people have installed, registered their serial number and input the reg number.  When the buyer tries to re-register the serial, they can't, since the serial number goes with the Cake account of the seller and the reg number isn't available.

I like Cake's methodology of trusting their customers.  I've got an iLok and had no problems, but there is something to be said to using Cake's system, esp. now that they have most of their programs downloadable from your account.  Makes getting a new computer easy to install SONAR.

The EULA quoted in post #3 above seems to be for a Free product according to clause 5. Perhaps it's for the Sonar demo.

The typical usage here is on the desktop computer for normal everyday usage, and one copy on a laptop for on-the-road and remote recording duties.

In my studio, I always have a backup computer which has all the necessary software/drivers installed  (it is usually my previous DAW).  It is ready to go in case there is a catastrophic failure during a client's session.  I also have sonar installed on my laptop.   This is technically three installations, but I don't think it violates the spirit of their requirements.  I am the only person who is using it, and I only use one instance at a time.

I hate ilok (have it for ProTools and Waves) and I really like Cake's trust-based policy.  It is one of the reasons that I buy every single new version of Sonar.   I've owned them all since CW Pro Audio 8.

Re: Sonar X3 on two computers? 2014/02/12 13:40:52 (permalink)
Yup - I have Sonar on 3 computers - 2 desktops and 1 laptop, and also am the only one using it, so it is 1 at a time.

I also am hugely grateful to Cakewalk for allowing me the trust-based freedom to have it on 3 computers, and it too is one piece of why I put so much effort into staying loyal to the product, and in helping others get the most out of it.  I try to give back to the community, and to Cakewalk.

I have the Arturia V Collection, and literally can only have it installed on a single computer.  I believe their mechanism allows me to remove the authorization on this computer, in order for it to be usable on a 2nd computer, and that this process can occur over and over again, but I have not pursued that yet - seems quite the pain.

Thanks Cakewalk, for forever.

So if I clone myself (as some here have done), can I work on one computer while my clone works on the other one?

The problem is even tho my clone is really me, I don't always know where he is or what he's up to, so there's always the off chance that he may be using my 2nd copy of Sonar at the same time I'm using the 1st.

Waves ditched the iLok, they now use a cloud system to move your licence from computer to computer; you can also move the licence to a regular USB key and use it like an iLok.

I wasn't sure if your smiley meant you were happy, or if it meant that your clone comment was in jest.  In the off-chance you were asking a real question:

That would, to the best of my knowledge, violate the terms of the license agreement.  A simple text message, email, or phone call, indicating a session was going to commence by one or the other of yourselves, with the other then making sure to not run a concurrent Sonar session, would be simple to implement, and should then keep the licensing agreement from your end, as far as I can tell.  (I edited the above because my prior wording was stupid).

Otherwise, that behavior would seem to warrant picking up a 2nd licensed copy.  It would truly be 2 different folks running the software in different locations at the same time.

The fact that the question was asked in the first place is commendable. I do believe most people want to do the right thing. Cakewalk showing trust in their customers seems to be returned by most users.
