http://phys.org/news/2014...ument-gloves.html#nRlv

Ray Li, BS '14 and Michael Ndubuisi, BS '14, talk about their new musical instrument, Aura, which allows the musician to control sound simply by moving their hands in the air.

Sounds interesting, but I'm not sure I'd want to see the control for the butt MIDI!

You do realize that most musical instruments make music when the performer "moves his hands in the air." Sometimes he moves his lips as well, but for many instruments hand gestures get it done. Moving gloves in a magnetic field is no more intuitive then striking a keyboard with your fingers or hitting a drum. And the Theremin was patented in 1928 before there was any computing to speak of. The musician controlled that by moving his bare hands in the air near a couple of antennas.

You know, I happen to have an EEG machine (that I was just getting ready to sell).  I wonder if it would be fun to connect THAT to MIDI with a middle-layer program to adjust things...  Hmm...

They are onto something there but I think it still needs more refinement. Even as it stands it is better than a Theremin. But notice how there are still two cables attached to the gloves. They need to get rid of them so the gloves/hands are totally free.

What I would like to see is a video camera that can focus either on a small area such as two hands so even the smallest movement of the two pinky fingers will trigger something. Or pull back to focus on say a dancer so their whole body can be viewed and all movements from everywhere can be translated into midi data of somekind.

Many years ago Tangerine Dream came to Australia and did a gig in Canberra would you believe. (in a hotel and there was only a very small crowd in there) They had some sort of 3D full sized holagram thing and a dancer moved right inside it and had enormous control over what the guys were playing. I could not believe it! Even when they just moved their hands you could hear changes in the sounds coming out front. When they moved thier bodies way more serious sound changes resulted out front.

Reminds me of this sci-fi show (but right now I don't think their intrument, the Aura,  is practical):
(and TV shows are TV shows)

about two-four minutes into video with the TV Show's intro for the episode inbetween the musician playing the alien's instrument starting the episode.
Waving the hands and playing the alien's instrument.
