Protocols Suck

there is a patient alarm outside my door in ICU that services the whole ward and has to be loud enough for a nurse to hear from the other end of the wing.
I reckon it`s around 75db,and when I queried the volume I was told it is "industry protocol" and cannot be turned down because  Occupational Health & Safety rules state it must allow for staff with compromised hearing.

the joke is that I seem to be the only person here who thinks that a loud alarm a few meters from my head, every 8 seconds, is acceptable when recovering in intensive care from major surgery and not having slept for 3 nights is an "inconvenience." which I have paid $180.00 per month for years for the privilege of being tolerated as a "difficult patient"by a 20 year old with more tatts  and worse breath than a syphilitic seaman.
maybe I am just a grumpy old man but lately political correctness and "protocols" seem to be getting out of hand and I can`t wait to get home where I AM the master of my universe.

that's better-needed to vent a bit-
cheers

I'm sorry to hear that.  Could you ask for some earplugs?  Sleep is very necessary while recuperating.  The time I've spent in hospitals has been mostly pretty good--considering I wasn't there for entertainment.  I didn't have the alarms to deals with.  They did have a habit that I didn't appreciate.  They woke me up at all hours to draw blood.

I found that some pain killers do REALLY good at knocking me out...enough to sleep for a few hours.....maybe???

thanks mate-I have unlimited pain control but they can`t knock me out yet as I am totally hooked up and intubated and have an embolism in my lung and an ugly clot in my leg which will probably removed tonight if I am stable enough so I need to be awake and typing one fingered is the best way to keep centred at the moment and keep my mind off the complications.
probably shouldn`t be here as I am pretty out of it but if I cant be an arsehole now when can I be?
    cheers

Feel free to be an arsehole--especially if it helps you get through this.  Again, good luck.

How utterly ridiculous - as if, in this day and age, they couldn't have rigged up a system which sounds a quieter alarm on the relevant nurse's person. In fact they could have done that 30 years ago.

my point exactly-surely a brightly flashing light would be enough????
things have really come to a head here lately and friends of mine in the construction and trades industry are really concerned at the level of beauracracy and reporting and conformity required to do the simplest of tasks.

Glad to hear it.  Don't worry, it will get better--it may take a while, though.

I looked up Buninyong.  I had the good fortune of visiting your neck of the woods in 1990.  I can't believe it's been such a long time.  I visited Mebourne and stopped in Geelong on the way to the Twelve Apostles.  I'd like to visit again some day.
