Puzzled and annoyed...
[rant] I'm in the process of downgrading one of my PC's so I can use my racing game setup below. Why do I have to downgrade? Well, the main connector requires a game port and all of the games are now about tens years old or older! What I can't understand is that during the late 90's into the early 2000's, simulation games kept getting better and better (and more realistic). Only computational speed, memory, disk space and monitor size were really holding it back. Now, with everything I just mentioned light-years better, the best racing simulations (according to those who REALLY get into it) are still those from around 2003??! And now you're forced to watch on those ridiculous wide and short monitors (because SOMEONE obviously thinks the only reason to have one is to watch movies on - they're feckin' useless for real work too...). I get why the knee-jerk reaction to not improve flight simulators happened, but that's no excuse for other areas. We should have games by now that use REAL images where everything is accounted for and modeled accurately. Instead there are some flashy BS arcade games - fun, but useless. I want to experience the thrill of these activities without any real danger. But this isn't the only area, I'd love to see games like the Descent series updated to take advantage of all the power, speed and storage that's now available. Any game that can cause some people to get motion sickness is obviously doing something right! If I want reality, I'll go outside and experience it, but when I want off-the-wall fun then let me have that too! The clueless idiots in Hollywood shouldn't be driving what we use computers for... [/rant] Ok, I'm off to install XP and a flippin' SoundBlaster that has a game port again and hope all my games still work, otherwise I'm stuck with a very expensive and useless dinosaur.

Man... all I can say is back when I was into flight and racing sims things happened that I know, without doubt, that your neighbors and the rescue folks would sure have a good laugh about how that bozo flew out his window- took out two fences, patio railings and damage to a few houses before coming to crash landing two streets over...that's why I noticed there isn't a seat belt.

Who knows? No one's ever been able to positively identify that mythical creature.

Nice... I've never seen anything like that! Of course I am from the "Pinball generation". BTW, I used to be a noid but it didn't pay enough, and it was really aggravating. J

You must be side-kick psychic Mike! That's the only game I've loaded on there so far... I've got a bunch of others ranging from silly arcade fun to GTR, but NASCAR Racing Season 2003 is STILL considered to be one of the top racing SIMs ever made. *Sigh...*

Did you build that or buy it? I'm thinking it would be ____ to use 4 monitors, two for the windshield, and one on each side for front windows, maybe a tablet for a rearview mirror... if the tech will support that, if not.. it should. I bet your setup there is a lot of fun! J

Bet you need anything else besides a computer - like all these game on the first page are for iPod/iPhone and probably others are for consoles like PS3 or XBox and the newest versions. ?? never play them myself. Wow... maybe next year. Those are (insert adjective here). I would like a steering with a 2 speed powerglide shifter for drag racing and a 4 or 5 speed for NASCAR. I didn't even know there was stuff like this. Old dog/new tricks... pinball etc. Actually I am from the marbles generation. We had dirt, a bag of marbles with a couple of "logrollers", and a stick with which to draw a circle. Really, this looks like FUN. Lemme axe you a question... I have never gotten into gaming. I mentioned that I play checkers (Byterun) on my I-Phone. I bought several others but I think they would be better on an I-Pad. They are Sniper Shooter, I play it some and my grand daughter loves it. I wouldn't want to be in her sights. The usual card games and Mah Jong. Minecraft, for the kids. I got Atypical Battle Supremacy, a tank game but I haven't played it enough to figure it out... I do like it though. I put Call of Duty: Strike Force on the cloud because it takes up a lot of space and I haven't been able to get past the dock area before I get bored or frustrated. I have extreme adult ADHD but also have two stents in my heart arteries so I cannot take what they prescribe for it... what I once abused I cannot use. On a side note... did you know they prescribe Desoxyn for adult ADHD? They do, it is pharmaceutical methamphetamine. amazing. Anyway, I have a really hard time staying on topic or with one thing long enough to really "get it". I just heard that Georgia just passed a house bill for medical MJ... of course they are not doing it right, they want to only make it available in pill form, marinol I guess. I think that will help me a LOT. It always tended to enable me to focus on something and make me "busy myself" with something. All that to say. Maybe soon I will be able to focus more and get more done, OH... and I had a question (see what I mean)? Question: since I have never gotten into gaming. I have been looking at getting either a PS4 or an Xbox One... OR... should I just get a gaming computer? Hook it to the big screen TV or to a monitor and can I use a gaming computer for streaming video and music like with a PS4 or Xbox? I am really ignorant about current possibilities. I just tend to stay with Comcast but it is getting really expensive. Last month I ordered one movie when the grandkids were over, everything else was the regular bill and it was pushing 250 bucks. I know I will still need internet but if I could get TV another (cheaper) way then I could cut my Comcast bill down to about 50 bucks a month.. but I really don't know up from down when it comes to consoles or computers for entertainment. I know enough to have a laptop for surfing, a dedicated computer for a DAW, and probably a dedicated computer (or console) for gaming, but I don't know which way to go or why. Sorry for the rambling post but maybe you can help me to know what I need. I bought a Onkyo A/V receiver with a wireless dongle thing, intendd to set it up to stream video and music but have not because it confuses me. I am probably going to hire someone to help me wet it up. Wifey is going to do some built-ins (shelving and drawers) where the TV sits so everything is going to change and then I am going to upgrade speakers, have a place for a turntable and whatever else I can add to an entertainment system. Still, what I really want advice on is console or computer and which and why. ... and THANKS! (if you can help) Julien

The last game I really enjoyed was Battlefield 1942, around 2002 or so. It was my first experience with multiplayer 3D carnage and I just thought it was some of the most fun I've ever had with a computer. Being able to jump out of a tank and into a plane, or just find a hiding place and take people out with a sniper rifle, or race around in a jeep and flatten the enemy...it was so playable. Games have come along technically in leaps and bounds since then, but they haven't gotten any more fun. These days I can't even be bothered to learn the controls.
JamesWindows 10, Sonar SPlat (64-bit), Intel i7-4930K, 32GB RAM, RME Babyface, AKAI MPK Mini, Roland A-800 Pro, Focusrite VRM Box, Komplete 10 Ultimate, 2012 American Telecaster!

Hi, A friend I worked with (Wayne was his name) was also a weekend race car driver, and he had these on a computer and used to practice passing and drafting on it, which are really well programmed in those things. His only complaint? You could not set the tire calibrations correctly to do an oval (for example), which meant the car would lose some control on coming out of turns and such. His setup did not have the "cage" but had everything else, and he was good, and he would be in first place in any race within two full turns of the field. This would have been around 1998 or 1999, and he was already on W98. But at the time, drivers were not that big an issue as they are now, but things worked alright then. I wish I knew where Wayne was, and if I did I would have shown him this thread and I bet he would have told you how to fix it in 3 seconds!
