Any help? Audible Hiss on track

Hi guys, I am new to recording and was hoping I could get a little help. I am running Sonar x1 studio, and a trial version x3 producer. I am running an M Audio M Track interface.
Now my problem is that on any track I create that is routed through the interface, I am getting a very loud hiss. This isnt only while recording. I can have the track just sitting idle, unarmed and I still get this hiss. I can see the green input bars slightly bouncing up and down as if it is receiving signal even when nothing is connected to the interface and all the gains are turned down etc. The only way the hiss goes away is if I mute the track. Is there any way to elimimate this? What would.cause something like this? Is the interface itself causing all this noise? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have had hiss problems pop up from time to time, and the sources have ranged from a defective audio interface to a bad usb cable to too much gain staging to a cruddy old computer.

Try to further isolate the source of the problem.  Does it happen with both of your versions of Sonar?
Have you used this same computer, interface and monitors previously and not had this problem?

Try disconnecting the interface and setting up Sonar to use your computer's built-in audio (probably with mime driver) and see if the hiss goes away, which would indicate the interface is the problem. Also swap interface cables.

Yes, it is probably the interface that's generating the noise. If it does it even with the gain and main controls turned all the way down, then I'd consider the interface broken.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
